Im about to buy a 2.0 fs engine from a protege and am wanting to build it for my protege speed...are there differences??

Just the tray between the block and oil pan. That has the oil return in-let. Same engine !!!!

^x2, same engine.
also, the oil adapter for the turbo oil feed and i think that's it, different torque specs on bolts. please...torque your engine down before boosting!

alright thanks for the replies everyone. Ill be picking up this motor on sunday looking to be ready for next season.

I know exactly how you feel about wanting to build an engine and swap it. I hate my speed protege as it is...I loved it at first but then when I found out about all of the little goofy problems like fuel cut, and not being able to boost the motor without dropping a ton of money, and the fact that the stock WGA sucks moose nuts it really made me wanna buy an FS engine and bullit proof the frickin thing! let us know how it goes!

Ima couple years late, lol, but did anybody ever follow through with the FS? Im in the same boat, blown engine.. :-/ Does anybody know the difference, if any, between the FS and the FS-DE? Appreciate any help I can get!!

did you read any of the above posts? it pretty much tells you what you want to know. the fs and fs-de are the same motor...its just more commonly referred to as the fs.

Oh yea I read em thank you. just dont know that much about engines man. was under the impression the engine in my car was an fs-det, now guessing the t is just for turbo. thanks 4 the reply although you speak as if i hadnt read the above, saw fs... and not fs-det, like i said dont know crap bout engines buddy, sorry, this is why i come on here b/c there are knowledgable ppl when i have an issue i need help on.

Thanks for using the search function, these are the same engines. The only difference is that we have a spot for the oil return line. Everything else will swap over easy. Just swap the lower portion of the block with the oil returnthe oil feed and the coolant lines for the turbo and it is now an MSP engine.

I think that technically the fs was the earlier version that had a distributor (probe, mx-6, older 626s iirc.) When it went to coil packs it became the FS-DE. Anyway, most ppl just say FS for either engine.

Differences from a FS-DE and an MSP engine:
oil cooler (under the oil filter)
T and oil feed line (between block and oil pressure sensor near oil filter)
main bearing support plate (has oil return line)
coolant lines for the turbo

Also, were the cams different for the MSP? I will have to double check.

Cams are the same, Im building now with 626 cams. Same things.

The he block itself is all the same. the accessories are different. (oil cooler, wedgetray, turbo things. ect)
