Mazdaspeed Oil Cooler Installed!!!

So how much does this really cool the oil?? Do you have an oil temp before and after? So it uses coolant to circulate around the oil filter, Is that enough to cool al the oil in the engine. If it does cool well, then it will be an excellent adition to my setup. I was planning on getting an external one that goes by the radiator, but if this does the job, sounds good to me. Keep us updated! Oh yeah, did you get it from the dealer, or somewhere else?

Yeah, I'm curious to. This is one that just uses engine coolant to cool the oil? I didn't follow how it "worked" without a "radiator" of some sort.

I guess I'll find out. I also know that in Europe the the oil change mileage is almost twice that of ours due to the fact that most cars over there I believe have oil coolers stock.

interesting....

but the price is too high!

isnt the "intercooler type" oil cooler better? and more affordable?

Can you explain this a little better? I too picture a "radiator or intercooler" type of oil cooler, and this one appears to be something entirely different, right?

well, you figure the MSP unit has to be better then nothing. remember, the fin air cooled unit is only as good as how much air it gets. the WRX and STI has a watercooled setup similar to the MSP. some turbochargers and even some unique wastegates use water to cool down the oil inside of the unit since water has better cooling properties then oil.

So Linux. . .did you use all the "required parts" on the "how-to" list?

I'm wondering what an "exhaust manifold exit flange gastket" is as opposed to the "exhaust manifold gasket".

Also, are the "water hose clamps" any different than normal clamps? (just trying to keep the costs down somewhat).

Let us know.

anytime you have a water cooled cooler its way better then finned, water disapates heat better then aluminum fins. to each thier own, if you get a radiator style cooler you need a pusher or puller fan or its worthless, i like the radiator style because you get to add more oil thus cooling it even more and more oil capacity and i love when the fans kick on. i have a tranny cooler on mine, thats the new style all new of its own. its above my FMIC. peace. i am adding a dual oil filter and remote kit for mine, more capacity better cooling cheaper and yet, easier to change oil. peace- trav

decked..tell me what you find...I have sourced a couple of dual oil filetr and remot kits, but I am awaiting the companies feedback on whether it will fit (adaptor).

Oh ya...with the Haltech F10, I believe you can set one of the outputs to regulate the "fan" for the oilcooler (on/off sertain conditions like temperature. The F10/E6X have some really cool features

Is the part list accurate?

cool, an excellent write-up.

anything else by theMan floating around besides this how-to and his faq?

the main site just has a list of anime =(

I am going to try this again using my old probe turbo oil cooler. By the looks of the oil cooler their isnt much difference beside mine is black and both connectors are both facing up isnstead of sticking out. I didnt think it would work befoe becaus i DIDNT KNOW THAT YOU COULD REMOVE THE THREADED BOLT. oTHER THEN THAT IT LINES UP. i WILL TRY TO POST A PICK but that probally wont be for a while. If anyone has playeed with the f2 block you would notice that the outsides are alot alike. So I am just going to try using the cooler. If it works It would save about $140 dollars since probes are easy to fin at the junkyard. Again this oil cooler is from the 1 st gen probe/mx6 2.2 liet turbo f2 block. Will keep yall posted.

What is the "exhaust manifold exit flange gasket" ?
Would I need this. . .since I'm turbo. I assume the other one is the one that goes between the manifold and the block. I was also curious as to if the clamps were anything special, or if I should just use regular clamps since Mazda will charge too much for a simple clamp.

ok... on the stock exhaust manifold, there's the gasket that goes to the head (aka, engine), and the other part that goes to the cat... the exit part

feel free to use the generic clamps... I got mine cheap, so there :p

it'll fit, but the coolant hose diameter will probably be different... on most other mazdas with factory oil coolers, the line runs from the heater core to the cooler then to the engine.. to me it's not worth the trouble trying to source a coolant hose that will fit... you'll still need to figure out where to route the coolant though.... of course, it's no brainer to run it the same way mazda chose to... but that'll still involve about 25-30 bucks of parts

and you might want to change that oil cooler gasket anyway, since it's old

Yes I am I already ordered what I need today. The size of hose looks to be the same. The f2 If I remember clearly just took it hos from the metal pipe I am changing for the fluid to return on the protege. The old one if I can remember rite just took it and returnede it in the same pipe. It actually wont be that hard I work at autozone and have two or three in mind that will fit perfdect. Thanks though. I have had three probes and one engine ion the shed still their isnt much differenc on the outside block from oil pressure placement knock sensor are all in the same place. The oil cooler isnt really and different then just the hose connectors both just pointing up from the looks of it. I am not worried now that you confirmed the cooler will fit all will work again. I starting comparing this about a year ago also following your other threads. After you listed what you paid for the peaces I need decided I could afford to do it with what I got. This oil cooler I had in the closet and was going to use it on a non turbo probe when I get one again. After comparing decided I could use on this car. Thanks again for your information and feel everything will run smotthly.
