Mazdaspeed AWD Conversion

Awd Mazda MAZDASPEED Protege

can't say i've ever done any type of conversion, so i don't understand every little aspect that needs to included when considering the possiblility, so excuse me if i missed something that completely makes this impossible.

in terms of height/width/wheelbase, the wrx and the msp are pretty simiar (give or take 1.5-2 inches in each category), and they both utilize smaller-type engines.

anyone wanna shed some light?

Seen a dodge srt caliber video. They use a Evo X transmission and rear differential to convert to all wheel drive ,maybe that may help out.

I think unless your very lucky to find a bpt-awd conversion, its going to require a lot of fabrication to the shell to make it work. not that its impossible by any stretch, just difficult. paying for it to be done prob isnt gonna be worth it..

after some quick googling though i wonder how adaptable a mpv/b2000 4wd setup would be. sure you would have to turn the motor lengthwise and prob make a trans tunned in place of the center console.. but you could mount a couple of miata/rx8 difs in it. front one offset to the side of the motor and use the halfshaft across like it is now.
i think of the two examples as the front drive output is part of the trans, where if you were to adapt a miata or similar rwd system you would need a mid mounted transfer case.. you could of course get creative with that and have a midmounted locking dif ect ect.

I think if i was gonna do it, id modify the transmission case of a G series to have a auxilury output shaft running on the secondary shaft or geared off the dif. would be dumb 4wd, but you could run a variable locking center coupling to control how much torque goes to the back. similar to the MS6 system.

Or you could just import the parts from Japan since they come out AWD there as an option fyi

The biggest problem would be the rear floor since the AWD and FWD floors are different.

its getting to the age now that i think you could just import one for less than trying to source the parts. but i couldn't find any concrete information about a 5spd awd. just automatics. for a town cruiser that would prob be fine though. i might get one.

but even the 323 gtx is not really smart awd.. its just full time 4wd which has its perks for sure, but it isnt load sensing or anything. just two difs and a shaft between them. i think the ms6 uses full time fwd with a load sensing coupling to the rear.

i think it would just be easier to learn how to set the car up for fwd heh.
