Mazda5's maintenance & repair cost?

Hi,
I'm currently shopping for a new car to replace our aging sedan. Mazda5 GT is one of the few cars that remains on our list after the road tests. When I talk to my friends, they say that Mazda cars are well known to have a very maintenance and repair cost, especially after warranty period. The Mazda vendor told us that it was true before Ford took over Mazda but now the cost should be in the same league as the others such as Toyota, Honda, GM. But it came from a Mazda saleman so I would like to make sure. Is it true? Please comment. Thank you

Well first off Ford only owns 33 % of Mazda.....

As for your repair maintenance look at the Mazda 3 as a benchmark car since the 5 is built off that unit. The maintence repairs are minimal now a days as maintenance is every 4 months or 8000 km (5000 miles) what ever comes first.

Besides your regular maintenance (lub sliders on calipers, alignments, airfilter change, and for sure oil and filter change) there is "Little" you can do to the 5 to make for a expensive repair....besides tranny but every car is the same.

Lets not forget this engine is a chain driven car which needs not be changed for the life of the engine....(NO MORE TIMING BELTS...less maintenance costs)

Four wheel disc brake system also reduces maintenace costs as it is easier and faster to change discs then the old style shoe brakes (if you can find a mechanic who knows how to do shoe brakes).

All in all I can stand up and say the Maintenance after a years usage is minimal and I expect clear sailing in the years to come....

BTW there are some knowledgable salesmen but they are all in canada...lol(rockon)

I can back up the "that was then, this is now" part of the story. One of my friends in the late 80's had a first gen RX7 that needed brakes. Two rotors and pads all around ran $1200 in 1989. Last year, my mothers Miata needed just about the same things, but with a caliper thrown in, and the total nut was less than $700.00. So things have changed, at least a little. If you are really worried, and I know everybody says to never do this, but if you are really worried, buy an extended warranty. The fact is that there is no longer a car that is "cheap" to maintain, just "less expensive".

I would say that there is no difference between Mazda and most other car makes as far as cost. The exception being some of the European cars, ouch! The platform sharing going on now between car models, and car makers for that matter, have helped bring down the costs of parts.

In our case, the Mazda3 and 5 share many parts. As far as repair costs, these are typically hourly rates that are common among all of the different dealers in the area.

Also, please keep in mind that Mazda was just rated #1 for reliabilty, for vehicles 3-9 yrs old. Beating Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Acura, etc..(nana)

Coming up on eight years of Protege ownership. Nothing remarkable about the costs and maintenance post-warranty.

Thank you

Thank you for your replies. That reassure me about the M5. Now, it's time to shop for a new stroller to fit in the back of the car. The one we have doesn't fit even with the 3rd row fold down (hand)

Actual, according the the manual, it's every 8K miles depending on driving habits which is every 6 months.

8k seems like a lot to me, we've talked about this on another thread. I change my oil regularly at 5,000 kilometers.

If you need a double stroller. I know the Baby Trend Sit n' Stand Stroller will fit. I've got one in the back of the 5 right now.
