Mazda5 vs KIA Rondo comparisons and articles (merged)

KIAs have been overweight gas inhalers ever since they moved into the sport utility and minivan markets. My neighbor, tier 1 auto supplier, stated that they got their crash test ratings by simply way over building their structural components, rather than modifying the design to improve the rigidity and energy absorbing properties. That is, they did it on the cheap. The problem is that this extra steel adds weight, and a lot of it. KIA Sorentos and the previous model of Sedonas have always gotten terrible mileage even though they were small vehicles for their segments. I suspect the Rondo will fall into this same category.
The new kias get good crash test ratings by offering outrageous safety features for the money. They are standard all around front side curtain airbags and good engineering. They are built on hyundai platforms. Yes the old sorento and sedona were overweight but thats cause they used a REALLY heavy 3.5 liter iron motors. That motor was a very old design that wasn't very sophisticated. Look at the new all alimunium 3.8 liter used in the sorento and sedona it puts out 263 hp/ 244hp and alot of torque and gives very good mileage numbers.

I <3 my iron engine Mazda :) she's still lightweight.

The old Sorento and Sedona though.. wow. 15/18mpg is atrocious, but no worse than like a Chevy Tahoe..

Chevy Tahoe is a boat towing, 7 seat, off road capable vehicle, I would expect its' mileage to be on the low side. The Sorento in particular makes the Jeep Liberty look like an incredibly efficient design. KIA is improving, no doubt about it, but I can still fall back on the absolute crap resale value. I still say the 5 is a slam dunk over the Rondo, if not just on the name alone :).

I'm sorry, Rondo sounds like something Homer Simpson might say. (omg)

well obviously you at a mazda forum lol. I mean go to the kia forum and you saying the 5 is better would probably cause a really long thread also. I'm just showing you the other side of the arguement. Also the sorento is extremely off road capable ladder frame brog and warner torque on demand 4x4. Don't hate on Homer Simpson he's the man!

You said it yourself - this is a Mazda forum, not a Kia forum. I think 7 pages is enough about how the Kia isn't a hunk of crap is more than enough.

One statement--

Its a bad Kia.

That should be enough to pursuade you not to buy a hunk of crap (first)

KIA forum quite dull

Actually...the only Kia forum I could find, I posted the question: "Convince me to NOT buy a Mazda 5" ...as of this morning, there were 8 messages...2 of which were mine, the closest anyone came to Mazda bashing was when one poster wrote: "I do not like the looks of the Mazda 5"...not sure what planet he was from...he is the first person I have come across that likes the looks and styling of the Rondo over the Mazda5...(he is a Rondo owner, afterall).

If anything, your quality post has convinced me to consider removing my Mazdas247 bookmark from my browser. Thanks for the helpful insight (into the intellect of some posters on this forum...go boost another engine and blow it!)

It does help Mr.Smart ass 4 post Kia lover. #1 you dont know s*** about how I damaged my engine and the circumstances. So shut it. 2nd. Who in the world rates a Kia as a good car? Do you ever hear that from people you know? "Hey Bob hows that Kia Rio" , "oh its super best car I have ever owned". Not likely. Kias are a crappy cheap car. Almost to the point of disposable after a few years. Do not discredit CONSUMER REPORTS because they are ****** for Toyota and Honda. <----Guess what, theres a reason why. Because they make superior, long lasting cars. Whos the number one selling car company in the world? Toyota....wonder where Kia falls on the list. Statistics dont lie. Kias are junk, theres NO way to disprove that. Look at their resale value, and current sale price. Cheap junk.

Hi revjay, sometimes one needs to simply accept a joke, like that post. But all brands have their boosters and you'll just get many opinions that you just plain disagree with. That's fine, none of our opinions are infallible.

So lighten up. And enjoy your new Rondo...even though I think we'd still buy the 5, the Rondo does look like a nice vehicle. It seems to me that the Rondo and 5 are sufficiently different in character that they'll fit the needs of different folks.

Who can't take a little sarcasm now???

I may be new to THIS forum...but I understand the rhetoric...rhetoric means "language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but is often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content."

As I think I have stated, the things I like most about the Rondo are the things not offered by the 5: towing, 7 seats...actually, if I could buy a UK spec 5 with the 7th seat option...I'd go with the 5 for sure.

I've never owned a Mazda.

I've never owned a KIA.

I am not a "booster" of either. I am looking for peoples "informed" opinions aka people who have some knowledge about the actual vehicles in question.

Some Mazda's are crap, some KIA's are crap.
...granted, KIA used to make more than their share of crappy vehicles...have they turned a new leaf? Perhaps, but time will ultimately tell.

I have not turned over any of my hard earned cash yet...

bahahaha you're so ignorant. I know people who LOVE the Kias they have bought.. They are GREAT economical basic transportation with great reliability ratings.

Locked - this is a Mazda5 forum and not a Kia Rondo forum. If you want to ask questions about the 5, please do so in another thread.

I drove one. They are emulating the I refuse to admit or notice or care about the fact that I"m driving on a road feeling of certain car makers. They have the drive feel of a boat. The 5 has the wonderful road hugging feedback of the best Honda cars that I've grown to love in the past. That alone would be enough for me to go with a 5 (and it was ;) ) but really I can't say enough about the sliding doors. The first time I loaded up the baby seat in the second row of the 5 vs any other car with regular doors I was completely hooked. I will never load children into a regular car door again.

I wish the car had the stability control that the Kias come with, but apart from that there is nothing there that makes me even vaguely wistful.

Haven't driven a Rondo but spent some time looking at one while at the Baltimore auto show last weekend. Looked like it was nicely executed, but totally devoid of character. It's a box. Nice dash layout, second row very comfortable, but can't fit adults in the third row because of the lack of headroom (and I'm only 5' 8"). I didn't think it was possible to have less cargo space behind the third row than the 5, but Kia managed to find a way.

As for the bench seat in the second row, I would wager that it's not terribly useful. The car's not wide enough to comfortably fit someone in the middle seat. Those of us with two car seats in the middle row know that it's a pain to remove a car seat in order to fold the seatback down and get to the third row, so it's nice to just squeeze between the two middle row seats.

Enough has been said about the utility of the sliding doors. But I also spent some time kicking around the new GM crossovers and the CX-9 (which actually has a comfortable third row) and thinking what a pain it is to get to the third row if you don't have sliding doors.

All in all, we were happy to drive away in the 5. It may have its faults, but it's such a brilliantly designed vehicle, we have no doubt we'd choose it again.
