Mazda5 Power Steering system problem.

Hello friends,

My car got an accident yesterday. When I turned to left, another one hit my right side fog lamp. After towing my car to my home, I found the power steering system is failure. I checked the EHPAS 80A fuse, it is OK. No physical damage. Still extremely hard to turn the wheel.

I learn that the EHPAS module in power steering pump will record some DTC info.

My question is, is that possible to replace a new pump and everything will be fine? $250
Or should I find dealer to erase this information instead of replacing the pump? More expensive.

What's the reason for this failure? Before it works well.

Thanks for your suggestion, Experts : )

I would 1st check for obvious things:
-PS Fluid still at the right level in the tank (Could have cracked or leaked from a broken connection)?
-Does the pump turns while someone works the steering wheel?

I don't know for sure for previous years, but '12 and up got their pump located not that far from where you say the car was hit. Might also have some internal damage.

Getting and resetting P/S DTCs can be done at home with a Bluetooth OBD2 Adapter (About 25$) linked to a laptop (with bluetooth) or an Android phone. You need FORscan soft/app, free on Windows, cheap on Android store.
On my '15, this combo has the ability to read/reset DTC on almost every computer in the car, including ABS/SRS.
