Mazda3s is burning or leaking oil somewhere

Ok, I recommended this car to my friend. After evaluating, he bought one (wagon). Now he says that it seems to be consuming or leaking oil somewhere (not known where). The dealer says "it's ok" yet also recommends changing the oil by 4k miles so you "don't have to top it off".

This oil consumption does not sound right. Anyone having similar problems?

i had a problem with my coolent levels, but once i toped it off it was ok since.

Mine consumed about a 1/4 litre of oil about every 600-700 km's for the first few weeks. Now it's been 9000 km's since my last oil change and barely a drop has gone missing.

Someone had a convincing post stating that it was due to the rings not yet being seated completely. This seemed like a good answer, and the timing seems correct, as my engine is now broken in and none of the oil has given me a Dear John letter since.
