I just purchased a 2004 Mazda3 S 4 door with 5 speed that is still under original factory warranty. I have noticed that when shifting into 3rd that it feels like I have to force the shifter and it kinda has a grind (up from 2nd or down from 4th). If I let the RPMs drop and gently push lever into 3rd, it goes fine. Do the 3s have a problem with syncros or shifter linkage adjustment, and id this something the dealer should repair under warranty? Thanks

I'm of the opinion that this is a problem with all cable shifters.
Best guess is that the cables get out of alignment when the drivetrain shifts under load.

A number of MS3 owners have reported the same issue, and I've heard the same thing from my friend who has an 07 Civic SI...

Went to Trussville Mazda and they said that I had a bad pressure plate causting the 3rd gear problem, and that the clutch replacement was appx $1000 and not covered under warranty (and by the way, I needed a fuel injection cleaning for $100). I did not buy that diagnosis, and went to Med Center Mazda. They said that the 3rd gear and syncro need replacement, and upon inspection, told me clutch was fine! Replaced under warranty and working properly. So, would Trussville Mazda have done the right thing and repaired the trans and tell me I didn't need a clutch? I really don't know for sure, but I would probably guess no (and the gear problem would have still been there). Trussville Mazda has new owners- looks like I will stay with the excellent service at Med Center Mazda with my 2 Mazdas...
