Mazda working on new powertrains, new Mazda3 and Mazda2 for U.S.

if Mazda was going to have a flagship model, what would be more appropriate than a sports car? would a large luxury sedan really speak to the design ethos of the company?

something like a Eunos Cosmo.....

IMHO Cosmo is not a true sportscar......rx-7 FD it's a true sportscar

don't see any major news about "NEW" models....like Mazda1 (design study scheduled for Paris 2008)
or a flagship model (not a real sportscar in my idea)

mazda needs a flagship model IMHO...

My thoughts (stoned). A flagship model has to speak for:

  1. Driver-Car engagement: not the fastest, nor the most powerful but a decent performance and fun-to-drive machine without breaking the bank
  2. Rotary engine
  3. Unique, sporty style/design
  4. In summary: it talks Zoom-Zoom

That's brings us down to the Mazda5... LOL, BS. No, seriously, it brings us to the RX-8 and, if you take the rotary off the list, the Miata in close 2nd. As long as the rest of the cars' line-up take one cue or another from that one, then its purpose has served well...

Oh, and let's not forget, we love these cars, but they are still Mazdas, so they cannot be $$$$ :)

ok , let's play the thoughts game:(jerkit) (first)

my idea on the 10's sports/high-end line-up:

1) Mx-5 ..current model is beautiful but not properly -placed...if the rumors i've read are true next gen mx-5 (2012-2013) wil be more "driver and performance oriented"...more specialistic...."s2000-like"....i agree...especially if you'll have a topless model at affordable price under the mx-5 (somethin based on the mazda 2 platform...let's see european Opel Corsa (GM) or peugeot 207 cc...a mini cooper cabrio competitor ...FWD it's ok on this model

2) rotary sports: in one word: rx-7... lightweight, 2 seater, 16-x based around 300 hp..overall performances at future 370z level...or Porsche Cayman-S if you prefer........(option of a dual clutch trasmission would be appreciated..;))..slightly shorter than current rx-8

3)hybrid rotary GT (Gran Turismo) flagship : in one word: COSMO.

hybrid system-rotary engine e maybe a dual fuel version (gasoline/h2)..personally i like the solution of freestyle doors of rx-8 ...a re-edition of that configuration would be nice.....more long than a current rx-8

4) MPS (mazdaspeed) versions of 2,3 and 6

zoom-zoom.........(drive)(cool)

P.S sorry fo my english

No problems about your English, it is not my mother tongue either, so no worries :D

That just reminded me that you are in La Bella Italia, and while not trying to make stereotypes for all Europe, Mazda over there has a better roadster/sports car recognition than in the US and Canada, so I think your thoughts make more sense for that market. Here in the US it also has a Zoom-Zoom reputation, but I don't see it as being the performance/super car company anytime soon.

But anyway, good thoughts, and by the way, I found this article and the numbers for the MX-5 and RX-8 (OK, this is England) are amazing, plus emphasize my point of adding a little bit of sports spice to each car built by Mazda:

The Mazda MX-5 wins 2008 ‘Best Convertible’ Award
http://www.carpages.co.uk/mazda/mazda-mx5-20-08-08.asp

"As Britain’s favourite sports car brand, Mazda is proud to top the sales charts with the Mazda MX-5 and Mazda RX-8 capturing a 20 per cent market share. Our designers and engineers aim to embody the heart of a sports car in all our products giving them responsive dynamics for a rewarding drive. The new Mazda6 is proving immensely popular and our new Mazda2 supermini, with its lighter weight, increased agility and new three-door body style, has already captured the prestigious ‘2008 World Car of the Year’ crown”

Ciao :)

Well, i think that UK is the place where Mazda have the best reputation as a sportscar brand...

Here in Italy the knowledge of Mazda as a "sporty brand" it's far less.....

and this introduce another problem: Motorsports activities in Europe are at "near zero level"

In USA there is engagement into: ALMS, Grand-Am, Star Mazda ,Formula Atlantic, SCCA..

Here in Europe nothing....(scratch)...

Europe...no motorsports? Wha?!?!? (scratch)

it's pure truth...

the only news this year it's this one:

http://www.kruse-schiller-motorsport.com/

a client (a.k.a. a PAYING team) who is trying to race in LMP2 in Europe Series...with the 4 cylinder turbo and lola chassis
until today a DISASTER...crashes, fire on board, no performances

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. You meant Mazda doesn't participate in motorsports. I thought you meant there were no motorsports.

ok.....

Ohhhh, I just read it as well and asked myself the same thing :), but you are right, not seen Mazda involvement on that level.

Yeah, I don't know too much either, but wife is from up north of you (in Germany) and while been there, first, I've seen tons of Mazdas, including 1st and 2nd gen Mazda5s (i.e. Premacies), and second, the Mazda perception as a brand is much higher than in the US and Canada, my 2 cents

Just check this article out:

I would love to see Mazda take on the Euros. Especially BMW, Audi, and Mercedes in DTM and BTCC.

Yes.yes...in Central/North Europe Mazda is much appreciated for its reliability and long lasting...look at this recent test..sorry it's in german....
http://www.autobild.de/artikel/dauertest-mazda5-2.0-mzr-cd-top_766433.html

the title is something like "100.000 km and run like a clock"...no minor o major failure, just ordinary maintenance.

But in the pasts decades engagement of Mazda Motorsports in Europe was a lot more:

-btcc with xedos6 (eunos 500 in japan)
-World Rally Championship before with rx-7 first gen and after with 323 4x4
-and last but not least a long term involve with official presence in lemans series...(1991 was the best year obiouvsly )

i would just see a major involvement in European Motorsport (WTCC, some rally categories like S2000 and more into the ELMS series)
maybe not into all categories but, damn...see something.......
