Mazda just released their sales report for September 08.
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported September 2008 sales of 16,169 vehicles, down 35.6 percent over last September. Year-to-date, Mazda has sold 215,408 vehicles, down 5.7 percent.
...
The right-for-the-market MAZDA5 multi-activity vehicle posted a 26.8 percent increase versus last September, with 1,080 sales. Year-to-date the MAZDA5 is up a remarkable 42.0 percent.

Probably can take it both ways (positive and negative). The Mazda5 is ONLY vehicle that showed a gain from last year. The 35% drop in sales is definitely not good. That rivals Ford's drop in sales.

It's good that the Mazda5 is holding up well, but it still beats me why Mazda doesn't advertise it more. It's like their ONLY car that is selling now, but it still won't even break 20K in yearly sales.

All the manufacturers are down:

Chrysler: -33%
Ford: -35%
GM: -16%
Toyota: -30%
Nissan: -37%
Honda: -21%
Mercedes: -2% (This is entirely driven by the new C-class. Without that model, they are down WAY more!)

This is more market related than a particularly Mazda issue. It does surprise me that the Mazda 5 is up and that the Mazda 3 is way, WAY down...

Yup, bad times in the auto industry.... but down 36% is probably worse that what most people expected... especially with how much the invested into the newly designed Mazda6.

Actually the Mazda 6 is pretty flat. The biggest hit is in the Mazda 3 numbers. Sales for them are down almost 50% from last September!

[Here's the monthly sales report I've been doing, it just adds the historical monthly sales from 2007 and 2008]

North America Mazda released their September 2008 sales data and 1,080 Mazda5s were sold in September, up 26.8% from the previous September.

That's 15,717 Mazda5s Year-To-Date.

For comparison Mazda sold 6,029 Mazda3s in September

Here's the data I could gather from 2008 and 2007.

Code:
                      North American Mazda5 Sales

       Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
2008   1699 2021 2758 2011 2072 1416 1336 1324  1080
2007   1323 1565 1657 1214 1449 1096  956  948   852  928  468  1627

barely over 1000 vehicles is still paltry...

I would think Mazda could easily sell over 50K (yearly) Mazda5s if it ever decided to advertise it....

So with the economy making a giant flushing sound, do you think that Mazda is going to sell over 20,000 Mazda5s this year?

Probably not.....but sales at all automakers are way down.....Sales at the invincible Toyota and Honda dealers are down 30+% according to today's numbers....So Mazda's numbers aren't all that bad in comparison...

Yes, in comparison, but the whole industry is in Bad shape.

Here is an interesting comparison. Projected sales for the Mazda5 for the ENTIRE YEAR would not even crack the top 10 of best selling vehicles in the US for a MONTH.

These were the top selling cars in the Month of May (2008)
* Honda Civic: 53,229 (including hybrid)
* Toyota Corolla: 52,826
* Toyota Camry: 51,291 (including hybrid)
* Honda Accord: 43,728 (including hybrid and coupe)
* Ford F-Series: 42,973
* Chevy Silverado: 37,020
* Nissan Altima: 34,428 (including hybrid and coupe)
* Ford Focus: 32,579
* Chevy Cobalt: 26,702
* Chevy Impala: 23,803

It's a great vehicle! But reality is that the Mazda5 is still very much a small niche vehicle that few people know about.

I still laugh about comparing the Mazda5 numbers to mainstream cars numbers. I'm sure that if the Mazda5s were the Corollas or the Accords of the world, many people in this forum would not have bought them, as simple as that.

But anyway, I like percentages rather than absolute numbers, they speak better of the situation in many instances:

The right-for-the-market MAZDA5 multi-activity vehicle posted a 26.8 percent increase versus last September Year-to-date the MAZDA5 is up a remarkable 42.0 percent.

If I recall correctly, Mazda's yearly sales goal for the 5 was 15k a year?

I didn't know that. Where did you read that?

If that is the case, they blew by that number!

Yes, it's true comparing to cars is a bit unfair but I just don't know why Mazda just doesn't push these vehicles more.

I searched for the sales goals figures I was referring to, but could not find any specific numbers. This might have been the original goal when the 5 was released in late 2005.
