While Toyota works on getting its FT-86 rear-wheel-drive coupe on the road and as Nissan plans a rival, another Japanese automaker is going to throw its two cents into the segment as well. Sources close to Mazda say that RX-7 should see a revival sometime in early 2011 and will mark the end of the slow-selling and expensive RX-8.

The next-generation Mazda RX-7 will use the companys new Renesis 16X rotary engine, which made its debut in the Taiki concept. While the 16X is capable of producing 350-hp and 215 lb-ft of torque, Mazda will keep output around the 200-250 range in order to stick the price-tag close to $25,000.

That will allow Mazda to have a more fuel-efficient, yet sporty coupe to compete with Japans upcoming onslaught of rear-wheel-drive sports cars.

two things

1 I hope to god it doesn't look anything like that picture
2. ditch the rotary for the love of god. At least offer it with a real and reliable fuel/oil efficient engine

Yea I hope that the 7 does not look like that. Hmm I was going to get a FT-86 when it comes out....I might get this..lol

I see very difficult for Mazda to drop the rotary engine, unless it really gets cash strapped or it is purchased by another automaker that likes messing with the brand identity. Also, if they drop it, they will also need to drop the RX-Y popular model naming.

Out of all this rumoring (yes, *this* time is the good one :D) one thing seems certain, they can only keep R&D $$$ for one rotary-engine based model IMO, so the RX-8 would need to be axed :(

To compete against the Genesis Coupe and the Toyo-baru, hope is not too late

yeah the look in't good but the new rotary likes very good.... 350-215.... I woud like to get information on that engine.

Guys the Taiki concept is just that, a concept. All they were saying is that they experimented with the rotary 16X in it. The Taiki is purely creative and in no way would be produced as is. It is however some of the styling elements that are taken from these concepts. Simply look at the entire new Mazda lineups front end and you can see what I'm saying.

What is their basis for making the claim that the RX-8 is expensive? The over heightened cost of the last gen RX-7 was part of its demise.

In the end I see the rotary continuing its journey, and if that leads into a RX-7 remake I think it's fantastic. The RX-8 has had a long run since its debut in 2003. I love every minute of it!

The rx7 name was based around the rotary engine. It cant be an rx7 if there is a piston engine.

That being said, if hydrogen ever comes around our way, you guys will be wishing you had a rotary engine. I wont tell you why, ill let your search skills find out for you.

Btw, i have an FD which supposedly is a "nightmare" to own and in the 6+ years of ownership, i didnt have one engine related problem. Even my twin turbo which is original still boost lovely.

Its really the lack of owner maintenance/knowledge that gave the FD or rx7s in general a bad rap.

The car(s) wasnt meant for idiots.
