WASHINGTON -- Mazda North American Operations is recalling nearly 31,000 Mazda CX-9 crossovers built for the 2007-09 model years to repair a problem that can cause the driver's seat to change positions unexpectedly.
Mazda told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that improper routing of wires under the seat cushion can lead to a short circuit that activates the power-adjustment mechanism. Functions such as seat position, height adjustment or seat back reclining could be activated while the driver is operating the vehicle, according to a company report to NHTSA.
Dealers are to attach the wires to the seat frame with a cable tie and replace the covering harness if it is damaged, Mazda said. Notices are to go out to owners March 9, Mazda added.
The recall information appeared Wednesday on NHTSA's Web site.
