Mazda 5 TS 2.0d
Hi all, I'm new to this site.
I've recently bought a Mazda 5 TS 2.0d with 47k miles. Full Mazda service history & 8 months mot.
Yesterday I noticed a white smoke coming from the exhaust as I was driving. Anybody got any ideas what this is before I get ripped off by a garage?
Could I put some engine cleaner or something similar in to rectify it?

Thanks in advance
Phil

More info needed.
Smoke color - white, blue, black? (oops just saw you said white)
When - constant, startup, accelerating, coast down?
Oil consumption? Fluid levels? Environmental conditions?
For example, if you saw white smoke but only at start up on a cold day that's normal it's just condensation water from the exhaust gases until everything is up to temp.

Hi, it seems to happen on start up and then also whilst driving. When I pull away from being stationary, but whilst driving too. The more revs, the more vapour/smoke. Doesn't have much of a smell to it either. Checked the oil today & it's fine, fluid levels are good, fuel consumption seems good too.
I haven't had it long enough for it to be because of the cold weather.
I have only done about 600 miles in it myself (including a holiday to wales) & all seemed fine, but the last couple of days when I've been pottering about I've noticed it.
Hope this is understandable??
Thanks
Phil

The only thing I think of its not reaching operating temperature due to the short duration of your trips the last couple of days. This explains why people who drive for only a few blocks every day replace their exhaust more often. Hey, is that car a diesel?

Is it turbocharged by any chance? After it has reached operating temp let it idle for 20 minutes or so. Does the smoke get better or worse? Free rev it a couple of times after the idle period and see if it smokes heavily then? Has it only happened on the current tank of fuel? Keep an eye on those fluid levels, especially coolant (anti-freeze) and engine oil.

Yes it's a 2 litre diesel. Thanks

I'm not sure whether it's turbo charged sorry??!!! I'll re-fuel it this morning then take it for a 30 min drive and see how it gets on.
Is it worth putting engine cleaner or injection cleaner in it?
Thanks

Different car but white smoke turned out to be a bad head gasket. The smoke was steam due to cooling liquid getting into cylinder.

No, pouring a bottle of detergents in the gas tank is not the magic cure for smoke out the tailpipe.
