Mazda 5 manual shifter suddenly stopped working

Hello,

I have an 06 manual mazda 5 with 88k miles. replaced the clutch in april. for the past month I noticed that the shifter would sometimes feel rubbery going into gear. today I was driving the car and everything was pretty normal. stopped the car and now I can't get out of gear and the shifter kind of dangles. it moves up and back, won't get out of gear. clutch feels fine. no bad sounds before it stopped working, just that occasional rubbery feel.

any thoughts? I am stranded 130 miles from home. thanks

Check the shifter linkage, I bet something is loose or broken there or something is stuck there.

thanks, towed to the shop. it's the cables which i think connect shifter to transmission. i think it's an OEM part only and mazda wants aobut $400 for the part. the part #cc3346500c. i don't see a work around so am biting the bullet.
