Mazda 3 w/ STI wheels

Yes, I got STI wheels last week and yes I put them on my car today. Still needs work though.

It's been done and documented 3 times. Once by a girl in canada with no lowering springs who put spacers on so that the difference in hub sizes wasn't an effect. Another by a guy who had the hub on the wheels bored out and then put 5mm spacers on the rear just to push them out more and lowered his car 1 inch, then he sold the wheels. Lastly by a guy with a speed3. no lowering. Just had the hubs bored out to 67.1mm.

I'm going my own route and making another reference for anyone else interested in a setup similar to mine.

First off the wheels are Silver 17" with BBS center caps straight off an STI. My car is lowered 1.8" all the way around. This does create some small problems when going from a 6.5 inch wide tire to an 8 inch wide.

I couldn't get a machine shop in the Dallas area to bore out wheel hubs for me. Most assumed I was on drugs and promptly ended discussion. So spacers became my only option. They work as long as you have 5-7 threads visible that the nuts can screw onto. The front spacers work perfectly and the rear needs to run a wider spacer (wider than 5mm) in order to clear the hub because for some reason it's longer.

So once everything was bolted on and seated up I took it for a quick spin through the dealership parking lot and realized a couple of things I have to work on:

1. Rear spacers (since they don't touch the wheel) slide a little on the bolts because of the inertia

2. The wheels are terribly unbalanced in the front (wheel shaking started at 35 mph)

3. When I hit even small bumps the back wheels scrape on the metal part of the rear fender.

4. When the wheel is cut all the way left or right it rubs slightly on the inside fender well.

5. I want longer studs just to be safe.

All of these things I will get too in the next week or so and I will come back and update here piece by piece as I get through with it all.

The one I got isn't universal. Its the exact size meant for a mazda hub (04-09 theyre all the same). 67.1mm hub bore and a 114.3 bolt pattern. I'm taking the rear ones off for now to stop them from rattling since nothing is actually forcing them onto the hub. Then an adapter maybe in the works. I still have to roll my rear fenders though first.

So far pics are restricted to my facebook. I apologize because with 65+ views on this topic people are probably clicking wanting to see pics. I'll take ones tomorrow when it's driveable since I took a company car home tonight.

Well the fenders MAY not have to be rolled. It's the rear quarter panels that are clipping and only slightly. When the car is in the air tomorrow morning and I have the wheel off (Going to run a 8mm spacer on the back for better fitment so the rotor doesnt catch the edge of the caliper like its doing now) i'll light bend or push in the metal that's jutting out farther than it should be which is what's hitting the wheel.

That's my update for today though, If the spacers and rolling solves most of my issues all I need at that point is my extended wheel studs in the rear (more of a mental comfort issue lol) to about 55mm or 60mm from the stock 50mm studs and I'll be a-ok. I'll update as things day by day and post pics when its said and done the way I want it. For now My pics that I have uploaded are on my facebook.

Finished product (for now) needs alot of cleaning up (rash etc.) and then to be PC'd dark bronze.

wheels flush.webpI have one or two side profile pics of the stock wheels (for flush reference) on my phone. I got another side profile pic up on my facebook that i'll share to here with the new wheels.

I know... so much facebook... damn social networking.

Cool. I was going to pick up a set of STi wheels for my wife's 5, but all the sets I kept seeing pop up on Craigslist were beat to hell. I'm surprised that the local machine shops wouldn't cut the hubs for you- I've never had a machine shop turn me down before when I've asked- but then again, have never asked in the DFW area. There are plenty of shops around though, so I'm sure you could find someone to cut the wheels for you if you keep calling. I had my Z71 wheels done for $100 on all 4 to fit my Hardbody a few years ago.

The ones I got have some pretty bad rash but I'm sending em off in about a month to get repaired and powdercoated bronze.

Yeah I realize I could have bought different bronze wheels that were already fitted and not rashed etc. but this is very rare to have been done. And I love the way that look. So wide and well stanced.

If any of you were still wondering how this came out, no I did not die. I'm getting ready for fire school so i've ceased all modding and been packing up to leave dfw. This is the cleanest picture of my car at the moment.
