mazda 3 cylinder head

Just curious if anybody knows whether or not the head from the 3 is capable of fitting on the block from a p5. And if it can fit how much work would have to be done to to convert seeing as the 3 has the variable valve timing. ie. engine management system, intake manifold etc.

would not even come close - totally different engines with totally different parts and patterns. nothing of anything would line up. the VVT would not work nor would the ECU thanks to things like electronic throttle control which the protege did not have.

i had a feeling there would be no chance of it working but figured i'd check anyway.

yeah, we're not like the honda guys sadly :( your best bet would be to do some headwork, maybe have a shop do it? don't know if anyone here has done that

I have my head worked

I got oversize valves and ported and polish head. I need the mazda Japanese cams to really go savage but i got the high compresion pistons to still make a difference. I also opened the throttle to 60 mm, and ported the intake. I had another intake in wich i removed all vvts and had the ports opened wide to make it 4 big holes, but it lost lots of torque so I replaced it back with the ported Intake.

and how much power did you get out of it all?

Dont know yet, Cuz I had installed the head, manifold and throttle only, it moved great but it over revved too quickly so I busted 2 valve guides at 7500, I got the head even better now cuz I got it angled in the valves, but I need to re-install it and place the HC pistons. I am a bit afraid about the compression ratio, cuz the head alone raises it allot, but if it goes over 11:1 then i will use the Meth kit. I will take pictures and post them when the time comes. I still need to get my Total seal piston rings to start the job. but since b4 it moved great I am sure it will do even better with those pistons.
