OK, so my poison is autocross and I rock a 95 Miata for that in STS. That being said, the 2 is the bad weather autocrosser, so far yielding 2 first place finishes. On top of that, the Mazda 2 completed 2 TSD rallys in the past two years, finishing second in both. This year, my Navigator decided to redecorate my car with his dinner yet we still managed a strong second using the TAs. The 140 mile day and night rally with some off road sections was completed with aplomb by my Bilstein shod and Corksport skid plate equipped Mazda 2. I like the fact that my DD can provide for respectable finishes while performing her DD duties so well. Bringing home the occasional antique dresser or chair hurts none, either.
If you never did a tarmac TSD rally, try it! But not with your better half. It can get hairy at times, like when the Nav throws you the clipboard accompanied by something like: you know your way, be my guest. Or when the Nav yells something like we are driving too slow/fast and you want to hand him/her the pretzel and say: would you like to drive?
Whatever you do or not with the Mazda 2, it does not matter. its a fun little DD, autocrosser, track day car, TSD rally car or road racer as you well know by now.
