Max Boost???

:
2003 Spicy Orange Mazdaspeed Protege
hey guys, i know this has already been talked about it the treads before but my buddy is looking at a boosted mp3 and the seller is saying that its running 20 psi. i told him to watch out for it b/c i know that these motors dont really like that much boost (since i own a mazdaspeed). so in short, what is the max boost that these motors can handle until they go boom boom? I havent seen the car yet but unless the internals have been changed i dont for see it handling 20psi. i'm just asking if im wrong or not. Thanks all for the help.

You are correct, unless the motor has forged rods, pistons and other supporting mods it will be blowing very soon. And since it hasn't already I would guess that the seller has done those things because at 20 psi one of our stock motors wouldn't last very long at all.

i am not positive but i have not seen anyone on this forum close to that amount of boost. i would agree with you though, unless heavily modded (forged) i doubt that is even close to safe with that motor.

ok thanks guys, i thought i was loosing my mind. ive had my speed since new and ive been on here for along time and ive only seen a couple running that much boost but those motors were forged and truely built up. thanks again guys for the quick response, i might have to take the 20 min. drive and go set this kid straight.

Even if the motor is built, I personally would stay away from buying a used car like that.
Unless it is from a forum member that you know.
Just make sure the guy knows what he doing and not just selling off a car that he bought with a bunch of problems.

ok guys, i went and looked at the car. lucky for my buddy he couldnt get approved for the loan. there were a couple short cuts done to the car and i didnt really like it. the car is running meth and i say "running" meth. i saw the hook up and all but since i dont know much about meth i wasnt sure what to look for. they hooked up the meth using the reserve tank for the radiator fluid. i thought that was a little weird but i looked past it. it had a custom made manifold with a turbonetics turbo hooked to it. the exhaust was the stock until it hit the muffler and it was a greddy that was welded on. there were a couple other things that were kind of half assed done to it.

??

well i own a msp i was running 13 to 15 psi on stock internals only mods are 3" downpipe n exhaust, forged wastegate and a fmic relocated maf kit.. i have heard of people blowing their engines at 12 psi i actually have a friend that blew his at 12..but the problem is that people raise boost but never check how much fuel ur getting and this cars tend to lean out after sometime cause mines did it n all i did was put on some sparkplug nonfoulers on my o2 sensor and it fixed the problem so wat i say is this cars hold at least 15 to 16 on stock internals as long as u have the enough fuel and dont lean out n have some support mods like the fmic n exhaust atleast..sadl mines broke but it wasnt the engine it broke something in the tranny im guessing differential cause their also known for that..ill have to see cause it was running for a day once it had already broken but i coulndt drive it past 20mph and eventually it totally gave out n know i put in in gear n it goes nowhere ??

yea that's your diff...and feel free to run as much boost as you want but there are many many threads on here and even some guides as to how much boost these motors can handle with the right mods before they go boom.

blew my motor at 8.5 pounds, if its taking 20 pounds constant im sure its built

Wait... you think putting some sparkplug non-foulers on the 02 sensor is all one needs to achieve proper fueling to run 15-16 psi safely?

rofl, say "hi" to the rest of the trolls over at msf.org for me

many people on the board have run a lot of boost safely on stock internals w/o blowing a motor. i ran 14psi for over a year on the stock turbo, 505zoom ran 12psi on a gt28rs for years, i think joep or blkzoomzoom ran like 22psi on race gas and was fine. good tune goes a long way.

Good point however most people just up the boost and don't take the precations of getting a tune or supporting mods.

well there are some freak blocks out there joka ran like 20 pounds then blew if im not mistaken but lets face it how many people out there really take the time to get that bad ass of a tune. either he is forged or is just saying 20 pounds to try to get a sale faster. that is just my oppinon i could be hella wrong

I wasn't rofling at the idea that it's possible to not blow up the motor at 15psi... I was rofling at the suggestion that the antifouler trick used to clear a CEL on a catless exhaust is somehow equivalent to getting the motor to add more fuel, let alone a tuning replacement.

EDIT: n/m you were referring to the OP. :)

I've been running 14 psi on a MAM Thumper kit now for almost a year on stock internals (built motor is in the garage tho just in case lol). A good tune, and constantly checking your oil, are key.
