Manual or automatic tranny

I like my auto with the sport mode. You have control over the gears like a maual but no clutch. The shifting is not very positive but that will all change with the turbo.... TTY

Manual's more fun!!

Yah, its da manual dransmizion zhat maeks za cah go fahst.

OK, Automatics are nice when you feel lazy, but going up a hill sometimes an automatic can't make up its mind to stay in the higher gear or to kick down. Very annoying and very fuel-wasting. I just hate that.

whereas with a stick, you can keep the car going with low revs up a long incline and downshift when you absolutely have to. Or if you really want to pony up the fill, then slap it down to 2nd and boom! off to the races up the hill you go. More control. Much more control.

Besides, replacing an automatic tranny costs several grand. On a manual transmission one can replace the flywheel with a lighter flywheel along with performance clutch and it costs much less and is more fun! You can't replace an auto tranny with a performance tranny unless you have like $15,000 to have one custom made.

You keep forgetting about the sport shift... Its a manual with no clutch. Can be very fun when turbo added.. TTY

i'm not denying it can't be fun (especially with a turbo; what car wouldn't be??) but the sport shift is still sequential.. i love the fifth to third downshift i can get with my MTX .. also, i like being in control of the RPMs including my launch.

However if your car remains in warranty or you choose to purchase the extra warranty than your high cost of transmission replacement at low mileage goes away.

stick is faster.... 9.0 sec to 0-60 mph
auto. 10.4sec to 0-60 mph therefore, automatic is (gay)

:D

First car to learn how to drive in - 1994 Ford Ranger 5-speed
First car to own - 1992 Nissan Sentra XE 5-speed
Second car - 1993 Toyota Camry XLE V6 auto, well I like how it rides, but it hate how it shifts, tranny got old, jerk like a crap, blew the motor a year later, before that I sometimes "race" with my friend's Prelude, won 2 times until he got an exhaust system and CAI.

Now... - Mazda Protege5 5-speed, oh yeah, like manual better, at least if it jerk when transmission shifting it's my fault not the car.

not again.....these AT v MT posts have to stop...Basically most people who get AT's are forced to for obvious reasons. One thing though is that autos are nice off the line...slammed many a 5 spd

im guna do one now. here is the ultimate equation for anything and everything
1/4 time
automatic > manual

Say WHAT? The FASTST auto time in our cars I've seen is in the 15's. I've seen manual times in the 13's...

I can't even comprehend why people would think an auto is better than a manual in the P5. The ONLY advantage to an auto is lazyness.

Automatic time is greater than manual hes right and so are you , your aruging the same point

manuals are faster on all shifts with a good driver except perhaps the 1-2 shift. much better 1/4 mile times, much better acceleration. especially on a car like the protege 5... it doesnt have that much extra power to waste in a torque converter in the first place! anyone trying to say automatics have better performance is an idiot.

Only if they don't know how to drive.

I sometimes accidentaly bark the tires with my 5-speed. Does *that* ever happen with an auto? ;) No. You gotta' _work_it!

'cides, i can bark the tires in 2nd also... Not a chance in the auto-schick.

Theft deterence. Most peeps theev'n the joy-rides look for auto.

I can 'anticipate' the need for accel and keep the car in the lower gear and then 'punch it'.

...And i guess i really *love* that smack/wiggle i gotta' give it to drop in to reverse! No! Wait! I *hate* that...
