MAM Midpipe

wha? so.. whats rattling then? I thought it was the cat literally sitting on the whatever.. crossmember?

bad.. I hope the hangers help ... if not.. im gonna be really b****y.. cause it seems to be a common problem and MAM is doing nothing to help/fix this problem.

It is far from common. We have sold 32 midpipes and less than a handfull have rattled. The rattling comes from bad motor mounts(motor TQ around) or worn exhaust rubber hangers. The stock midpipe is 2".When we build the 2.5" midpipe we pull the hangers up some to help with height off the crossmember. The added weight of a SS catted midpipe will sag the stock rubber hangers quick.
If yours still hit's after the Kartboy hangers go in, you can either bend them up just a hair(don't bend to high because you'll hit the bottom of the car now) or send it back and we'll adjust the height.

I stand behind all my products, if their is a problem we will address it.Their is never a need to b****, we will fix problems no questions asked.Next, make sure your motor mounts are good.If they are not, the motor will TQ over on startup and accelaration and cause the pipe to hit the crossmember. No matter how high the pipe is on the hangers, if your mounts are bad, it will cause the pipe to hit the crossmember and under body due to the amount the motor is moving. If your mounts are bad, call SPD and order an AWR mount. The mounts in our cars are known to come apart on fully stock setups. They come apart quicker with mods.Once you get the hangers in, please update me.

The stock rubber hangers are very weak. With the added .5" of pipe(going from 2" to 2.5") and weight the rubber hangers don't last long. Everyone that has installed or already had Kartboy hangers do not have rattling problems. We did have one guy that some rattling after 2 weeks but after inspection he found his motor mount was torn.

How do I tell if my motor mounts are bad?

Put the car in first gear and pull the E-brake up.Slowly let out the clutch while giving it gas.The motor should TQ over, when it does this look for clunking or have someone look at the motor and see how far it moves. You can also look at it and see if they are ripped.

lol.. no clutch... automatic...

the engine torques.. but according to mazda, that amount of torque is normal...

Then follow the same thing but without the clutch. The end result is the same.Pull the E-brake and then start o give it gas and see how the motor TQ's over

out of the 50 proteges i have seen only 2 still had a good front motor mount

yeah i dont know how to tell is a motor mount is bad. but im sure my front one is bad..i get the rattle only after alot of drving so its nothin to worry about..the hangers fix it

I'll be driving up to Kartboy's place and pick up a set today and hopefully have them installed/tested later tonight. I'll post pics of the exhaust hangers once they're in. I hope this will stop the midpipe from hitting the cross member.

BTW, while I was searching I came across threads where the ladder bar wasn't worth the price nor did it fix the problem. However, if these exhaust hangers don't work then I'll just get the mounts from Chris this weekend. I wonder how much more stiff these are compared to the stock hangers? Oh and I also have an HKS exhaust and remember reading something about the Kartboy hangers not working well with it.. Anyone know? thanks for the help guys -j

thanks! I just emailed tom@kartboy.com so hopefully he'll get back to me asap. I hate removing hangers, a lot of wd-40 and pullage!! Has anyone ever dealt with him? I hope this works because I am really running low on funds right now especially since I might get cut from work this Friday. =( I need $$$

I'm having the same problem as you pretty much. I just got the Wagner header, downpipe and midpipe... and the mid pipe is hitting the crossmember.
What I've done was add some washers to the crossmemeber.. that helped some. And I just got the kartboy hangers... I was only able to get two of them on. But it seems to have helped. Still debating front motor mount from AWR... and from what I've heard so far is that the GT Spec 4 point doesn't help.

Good Luck!

Yeh... the kartboys are ultra stiff.
I am also going to go buy long bolts so i can add more washers to the cross member.

does added more washers to the cross member affect the performance of the car because i was a bit scared that it would change the handling or flexing of the chassis.. its good to see that you guys are coming and confirming that the ladder bar doesn't help much.. almost spent another $150 :)
