Making a fs-ze style vics resonator box for the fs-de intake manifold.

I'm thinking about making a box to replicate the "black box" found on the top of the fs-ze intake manifold, for the fs-de intake manifold. Has anyone ever attempted this? I don't think it would be very hard. Weld up a small box out of maybe 1/8" aluminum sheet, with a small diameter pipe going into the vics chamber of the fs-de intake manifold. If you can fine tune the volume of this aluminum box, theoretically, it should make an fs-de manifold the same as/better then the fs-ze manifold. I'm seriously considering trying this out. There is a dyno shop (only one in the province!) about 10 minutes away from my house, so I could fully test it as well. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever tried this before? Any thoughts?
 
That sounds like a whole lot of work for not much gain.

On a 350Z increasing the plenum chamber with a 5/16" spacer (to change interior volume) DOES make anoticable difference. But for the FS-DE i just don't see it - especially if you have to fab up the box yourself - and, just like making a proper sub box - the math is critical. 'How much bigger is needed?' is high order engineering... ;)
 
Only thing with Resonance chambers, is that you will have to put a lot of research and work into making it resonate at the correct frequency for the maximum amount of gain. I think it would be a cool idea even though it would never apply to me. I just like innovative ideas.

Make a box that you can vary in size... maximizes the benefit of your dyno time. Probably have the top and bottom half separate, with overlapping walls... the walls are separated by a rubber gasket to keep the resonator airtight (relatively). Dyno it at its smallest size, dyno at its largest size, dyno it halfway... compare... then pick an arbitrary size between the two higher readings to see if more gains are available. If not... go for whatever size gives you the best gains and weld the box together. Done!

Would cost a lot in terms of dyno time for what is likely a minimal (probably 3 whp or so) gain, but would be an interesting project.
 
I was thinking about making it modular (removable/additional) anyways because in order to install the manifold the box would have to be installed in parts after the manifold is on the car. I will make different sized boxes before I dyno it. The dyno I am talking about has been nicknamed "the heart breaker" because it reads low. A 5 speed 2.0 lx was dyno'd there with a cai, and catback and got 91 whp instead of the usual 105+/-for example. I wouldnt mind getting my car dyno'd after I get my cams installed regardless if I have this done or not. Attached is a rough diagram of what i plan on doing. It may not make any sense at all to you, but it works in my head

The first assumption is that you have changed the airflow at RPMs above 5K substantially from the parameters the engineers used to tune the VICS flow path length...

meh.

Go for it.

You just have to be smarter than an engineer with a MS and flow bench to test theories.

I don't have to be smarter then any engineer, they already did the work with the FS-ZE intake manifold. All I have to do is replicate or come close to replicating their findings. I don't think the volume of the box has to be the exact same. If it is a little bigger or a litter smaller I doubt it will have much effect on the main principle. The fs-ze manifold has a box that appears to be about 750-1000cc's larger then the fs-de. All that space helps push hp peak to 6800, instead of 6000. If my box is a little smaller, or a little larger, it will still be pushing the peak power rpm. As long as I don't go way above the FS-ZE chamber's size I really don't see it being an issue. The VICS chamber is a stagnant air chamber, all it does is help with the Helmholtz resonance theory, scavenging, and the effects of additional valve overlap. With my long tube header, and cams with more overlap, this mod should help, allowing for more clean air to enter the combustion chamber during the valve overlap stage of induction/exhaust at higher rpms. If it has no effect at all, or even Ill effects, I will still have a manifold with vtcs removed and ported. I could easily just plug any hole I make. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
