Since I have a fried headgasket on a 118K mile motor and am unsure what other damage may have occurred, I did some checking on the low miles used motors
Looks like a pretty good deal - I have two quotes so far
- first from http://www.engineandtransmissionworld.com/ is for a 36K mile motor for $1250 shipped
- second is a Japanese import - they do not specify miles, but say generally the motors have under 45K miles on them. www.UsedJapanMotors.com - the quote came from one of their brokers in TX - Engine World USA. $970 shipped.
Has anybody dealt with either of these suppliers?
Anyway - for about a grand for a good used motor with under 50K miles it seems silly to even attempt to rebuild mine. Best case all it needs is a headgasket and head resurface plus it needs a timing belt and tensioners anyway since I hadn't done that yet. That would run $400 aprox. But that is only if the head is slightly warped and only needs a surfacing. And then you never know if the rings are still good.
So I believe the 36K mile motor from the first company is a US motor. Is it worth spending an extra $300 to know the mileage is only 36K? The car already has 118K on it. Seems to me that is just a waste and the Japanese import is the better way to go.
Welcome any thoughts or experience from the group.
