Ok, how would YOU go about modding your mazdaspeed protege to get after a 12-second quarter mile?

I just want a bunch of opinions because there are a trillion ways to do this, and just wanna see what some other people think. Just throw everything out there, pretend cost doesn't really matter that much. Im not saying a complete new engine and crap, but hey, get creative. Just wondering because people think of diff. things to do and it's all very interesting...so go. How would YOU do it?

yeah...i think there is ONE member in these forums that has a 12 sec MSP, and its like 12.9, which is still beter than my 16 sec ES

On second thought, if I could do it anyway possible I'd go two routes:

1) Jet turbine
2) Build the motor and then spray a 700-shot of nitrous on 20" Daytons

Dude happiness is in the corners. Our cars are quick but they are not engineered to be 12 sec drag monsters. Nothing in life is impossible if you want it enough though, so it can be done.

MAM Thumper kit.

If you can't pull 12's with that I don't know what will do it. I have ran 13.5's with bolt on's and 10 psi on the stock turbo. So I think with the thumper kit it would be easily attained.

if you check out the 1/4 mile thread you will see what you need to achieve those times. basically you will need all bolt ons, internals, fuel management, bigger turbo, and drag radials to achieve 12s.

actually focus, who reached the 12.9 mark, has a gt28rs. so he is not on stock turbo.

True but I also think it can be done on the stock turbo, at its limits probably. Keep in mind that Juan ran a 12.5 in his P5.

yea juan has a COMPLETELY different setup then an msp though...can't compare those 2...blkzoom almost ran 12s with almost all the stock parts in tact, so it can be done with a good driver and good traction..

Disco potato, engine management and a 3" catless exhaust
from the turbo.I'd say that would do it. oh yeah, also get some traction.

Crank the boost to 20 PSI, push the car to the line, start the car then floor it....the engine might last 12 seconds :-)

Even if you forge your engine, put on motor mounts, and slicks for good 60' times you will bust your LSD, tranny, and burn out your clutch with the added stress provided by those parts and the added HP to run 12s. You might want to upgrade to a stiffer front suspension also. Lots of $$ is going into a 12s car that will run somewhat reliably.

A great reaction time and traction. You will want to have a Spec clutch, boost controller, down pipe, and supporting exhaust. Throw in some Sunoco GT 100 or other race gas and hit the track. Cool your engine between runs. 12's might be pushing it, 13's are very acheivable though on street tires. There is no reward without risk, so be prepared to deal with drivetrain issues in your quest for 12's. Blown motors, LSD's, CV axles, and clutches are very possible.

Read my signature and that will get you in to the twelves. I was only able to pull off a 12.9 with trap speeds of 112 and 115 MPH because the track was way too cold. I was spinning all through 1st and 2nd and halfway through 3rd.

Next spring I should be able to get some low 12s with the same setup.

20' daytons will keep you in the 15 sec range no matter how much nitrous you inject.
