Protege es 2002
So, just purchased myself a gently used MS3 after tuning my protege. The protege was fun as hell but with no balls at all it was time to go fast. This thing is bone stock, and im wondering where to go. Anyone out there done anything to their speed's and have good suggestions?? CAI, FMIC, corksport products, cobb products???? FEEDBACK PLEASE!!!

Looking for first hand knowledge only, dont tell me about some guy who your sister dates who has one all tuned like a frenchman (i dont care)

thanks guys!!

LOL...that was funny. On a side note, from what i've read on here, get a Down Pipe 1st. Then go from there.

False. Do some research first. Downpipe opens up a whole world of potential problems. There are many different routes to go mod wise. Do you want power, handling, trans?

Rear motor mount upgrade is a MUST. I could talk for days about all of it but there are plenty of threads and knowledge about it all. Take some time and research.

Do a search regarding all your questions. They have been covered by a previous user.

Summary of what to do:

1st: Get mounts and bushing
2nd: Intake & monitoring device (either SRI or CAI & either DashHawk, Scan gauge, or Cobb AP)
3rd: Tuner (either Cobb AP or Hypertech, I prefer Hypertech for a daily driver)
4th: Intercooler
5th: Downpipe
6th: better fuel pump or internals.

These are power upgrades, but suspension upgrade and better driver skills will make up for power gains in corners.

What year model is the "gently used" MS3? Is it generation 1 (2007-2009) or generation 2 (2010 and later)? It makes a difference regarding order, sequence and safety of mods.

If you are looking for a power gain, mod #1 with either platform is a good aftermarket intake, either CAI (my preference) or SRI (majority of this forum). Intake alone transforms this car. Stock intake is extremely restrictive. Any well-designed aftermarket intake (search and do your homework) will give you about 15-20 whp gain! Single greatest bang for the performance buck you can spend. Do that NOW.

Mods in my signature are typical of bolt on's used on gen 1 cars safely. Once you go past intake you do need to be able to monitor your engine for basics like AFR's, boost and high pressure fuel pump pressure in order to stay safe. If your fuel pressure under load stays at or above 1600 psi, preferably 1700 psi, which many gen 1 cars do, you do not need a fuel pump upgrade. I didn't need that upgrade and still don't even with a fully catless 3 inch downpipe and racepipe into the stock CBE. But some need the pump internals upgraded, so be careful and know your pressure.

BTW: Whatever you do, if you are modding on a budget and are focusing on power mods, please know that the stock CBE is excellent and outflows the turbo itself. Unless you have modded the hell out of the car to the point of getting above 300 whp (which is hard to do on the stock K04 turbo), you'll not pick up much in power gains with an aftermarket CBE, only a change in exhaust volume and/or tone.

Its a 2007, only had 40'000 kms on it when i picked it up. Sexy black. I want to get a CAI for it, I can tell when driving that it wants one. i can just feel it. Im not trying to get major HP out of it since its my daily driver, just a little more would be nice.

Ive been told any plug and play tuners will explode the engine over time, that i must do piston con-rods, bolts and head studs before messing with the engine tune. And this was a shop forman at a mazda dealership who races a mazdaspeed 5 and 6 so i HOPE he knows what hes talking about. THOUGHTS???
He said start with an intake and downpipe, the engine will love me for it.

Fixed

Oh, and search is your friend. Just go to Google, type "Mazdas247 and 'whatever topic you want to learn more about'" and press enter.

^^ What he said. The guy you talked to is a moron. The hypertech tuner is a direct plug and play that has been dyno tested so extensively it makes my head spin. Research, research and do more research. We're here to help.

Thanks WillD.
Have any of you tried any tuner boxes? Cobb vs. hypertech, etc.

You can tell the speed runs real rich, and it boggs after like 5500 rpm at wide open throttle. So what, these tuners just have better maps? i read that they get better gas milage...more miles per gallon, but since i speak metric i have no idea how many miles per gallon my car gets...you crazy americans with your odd math system. i love that you wont change, makes me proud!

I haven't tried any of the tuners (it's on my lengthy list). I'm not an expert on them either but there are some folks around here that are.

Btw, I get 25mpg (58.75 liters per km).
