Lost key fob

ANy of you guys have to replace one yet? What should I expect to pay?

In NY I payed 85 for a key fob purchased on ebay and 121 to program at the dealer. I did not cut the insert key though.

All joking aside, you DO know that there's an emergency key inserted in the fob, right?

I just called a local dealer and they told me $120 just to program the fob. I'm in the market as I want to install a remote start at some point this summer in preparation for winter.

I can't imagine it takes a long time to program this, so that fee is ridiculous.

You are right I was out of there pretty fast. They even did a a multi point inspection and inflated the tires (probably just to fill the time)

$120 just to program a key, what a joke. Another example how technology has made life so expensive. What was wrong with getting keys cut at the local drugstore. Next you will hear how you car's computer got a virus and you will need monthly anti-virus software for your car.

Other Mazda's with fobs, etc, you can program the key if you have the spare and you do it by opening and closing the door and turning on/off the car a special way.
The CX-5 is probably the same, just gotta wait till someone figures it out or looks it up and posts it.

Previous Mazdas had you enter the auxiliary key and turn it in some specific fashion. We obviously do not have that luxury.

Yes I know, I've done it on my Mazda 3.
The reason for that is it detects the chip inside the key.
We too have a chip inside the fob, if the battery is running low, manual says to touch the fob to the start button for it to detect the key. This could be a method for reprogramming the key in "keyless" cars.
It's very unlikely Mazda came up with a special external tool to program keys for $120 each.

Obviously there is a chip, but enduser programing does not seem like a possibility.

Does anyone know if the auxiliary key has a chip? I'm wondering if I need to go the dealership to have it cut or if I can just have it cut at home depot. When I called the dealership they told me it was $90 to reprogram the fob and an additional $35 to have the key cut.

No it does not have a chip. All it is good for is opening the driver's side. It can not start the car.
$35 is way expensive.
I had a Mazda 3 key cut at a dealer for $8, and that key is required to start the car!

Advise if Home Depot is able to cut that key, my understanding is only the dealer can cut it.

Home Depot should be able to cut the key. It's standard.

I even had HD cut keys for my 07 mazda3 and then was able to program them my self. Our aux keys should be no different.
