Looking to buy a Protege5...

I'm looking for an '01 or '02 Protege5 to buy. It must be a 5-speed and have a sunroof, the rest is optional. I'm in SE Tennessee, but would be willing to travel for a good one.

I'm back, I'll check back on a regular basis. I've already checked Autotrader, eBay, Craigslist, and every other internet for sale site I can find. There is a decent yellow one on eBay now, but no sun roof, so my wife vetoed it! (bang) I missed a red one down in Florida a few weeks ago on eBay for $4000. There are plenty out there, I'm waiting for the right one.

dannyboy17, I saw yours in the for sale section, good looking car! But I'm in the $5500 price range.

Timing is gonna be everything in that price range. As soon as it's available, it's gone!! So, be prepared and have cash in hand for when the opertunity presents itself.

Yeah, the key for getting a good used car is....you already know, the time. I waited 3 months for my P5...my g/f is luckier got a decent cheap '00 LX by waiting only 1 month...

Oh, and check craigslist for Atlanta too! since you don't mind travel a bit.

Found one! I drove all the way to Atlanta to buy one identical to this one, but it was a major POS. (argh) Came back home and this one was on the local Honda lot. I usually don't deal with the big car lots, they price their used stuff too high and will not come off of the price. But I gave it a stab, cash in hand, and they dropped from $6500 to $5450. And the nice thing about buying from a big dealer is the service. I got a full tank of gas, they washed it before I left, and will be giving us a loaner car next week while they fix what ever is causing the check engine light to come on.

Timing is everything. When I was looking for new car there was a lot of them listed around, but more miles per price and such. I got mine for $3000. Yes it needs work and such but I needed a car, plus I like the p5. And its a student car. So it is all for what you are looking for.

Had a very similar situation from a honda dealer a couple of months ago. CEL can be quite elusive. If at all possible, get them to write out a "We Owe" slip stating they'll correct the problem. Sometimes the first fix/diagnosis isn't the problem. keep us posted.
