Looking for Mazdaspeed EEC type.

Hi all,

I drive a 626 which is going to be upgraded with the Mazdaspeed Protege turbo setup. Before the install gets underway, I plan on setting up the EEC appropriately. My EEC is the EEC-V. Does anyone know if the Mazdaspeed Protege is EEC-V, or EEC-VI?

Assuming it is an EEC-V, all is well for me. Once I have the tools to retrieve the flash binary image off of my EEC-V, I will need a Mazdaspeed Protege binary to compare to. Is there anyone in my area, Baltimore / Washington D.C., who would be willing to let me read the binary off their Mazdaspeed Protege?

By the way, I am an electrical engineer, who specializes in embedded system development. This is a serious post, I will be doing this, and will also be willing to share with the community.

Thanks,

rj

The Protege5 uses an EEC-V so you should be able to flash your ECU over to the Mazdaspeed data if you can find someone to do it. This is all assuming that the Mazdaspeed Protege also used EEC-V which makes logical sense.

Edit: oh and you must realize you can make millions off flashing naturally aspirated Protege5 peeps ECUs to the Protege MP3 specs (advanced timing).

good luck with the swap.

Well if someone wanted to go the full Mazdapeed protege swap they might want to go with the MSP ECU, especially if they don't have the $$ to spend right away on some decent ECU tuning.

Hi,

I am doing the full mazdaspeed protege turbo setup. Mazdaspeed motorsports has a kit with most of the components (excluding intercooler, ecu stuff, etc). The ECU cost is more than I am willing to pay for, even with the Mazdaspeed Motorsports discount. Especially, considering the fact, that this EEC-V will only be used for emissions testing. See the next paragraph.

I am creating a custom ECU design which will be swappable with the EEC-V (will use the same Ford 104pin connector). The swappable setup is necessary, to allow easy modification back to the EEC-V (OBDII is required to pass emissions tests in MD). Also, in order to pass emissions with the turbo setup, the EEC-V will need an updated flash binary (similar to the mazdaspeed protege). The custom ECU design will also have a display controller, data logging features, and whatever else I decide to add.

Also, for whoever has a MSP Protege, I need to know if your EEC has the J3 connector (board edge style connector on the back of the circuit board). It most likely does not, but, I still need to know.

Thanks,

rj

Sweet....maybe if your setup works...we can get custom flash/chipping similar with what they do with Honda ECU's(wow)

If it is anything like my stock Protege5 ECU and Protege MP3 ecu than it does have the J3, but it's covered with some thick waterproofing that is covering the entire board.

That waterproofing is removable with a razor blade and some scotchbrite. This is How I've installed chips on every single mustang I've worked on. I didn't realize our boards had this, this could make things possible for chips.
Reuben, You need to realize right now that if you're willing to hook up with a good tuner, you could make a PILE of money doing reflashes/ burning chips. I'd let you borrow my ECU, but I'm in VA:-(

I bet you could get at least 25 people (just a really lowball estimate) who would want their P5 ECUs flashed to the MP3 specs. I could let you borrow my MP3 ecu when you get things figured out.

Then all you need is a P5 ECU to flash, and sell it to someone for trade of their P5 ecu, then flash that one, and ship that one out, etc.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll be ordering the setup for extracting the flash binaries this weekend, from moates.net. I have my 98 626 EEC-V and a 98 protege EEC-V to start with for binary analysis.

Also, any MSP owners, please confirm the EEC type on the MSP and whether or not the J3 connector is available. I've checked the collision guide for the MSP and they only give the EEC stock part number, not its type.

Anyone ever used the http://www.mazdatechinfo.com/ mazda site? One of my secondary objectives will be to compare the OBDII uploadable version of the binaries, with the actual binaries post programming.

Thanks!

I know a ton of MSP people run a piggyback or standalone ECU so they've definitely seen their stock ECU, but maybe no one was adventurous enough to remove the black plastic cover over the J3 plug? Someone will probably come along soon. I was about to say maybe post this in the MSP Engine & Performance section but then I noticed that you already have haha.
