LOL at Mazda warranties

Haven't posted or really even lurked in a very long time as I've gotten out of the "scene" a bit with modifying cars and meets etc so it's unfortunate I felt compelled to come here due to a negative reason again..

Anyway my 2008 MS3's shifter had been sticking lately when using reverse. I'm very careful with it as I've heard from other earlier owners that if you don't push it all the way down you can wear out the reverse lockout mechanism. Well tell that to valet's and stuff. I live in the NYC metro area and lots of places you don't have a choice. A couple of times in traffic I had to bang on it to get it loose or else someone might have killed me lol.

So I've been meaning to get it looked it and guess what...it gets completely stuck and won't go into reverse and then as I'm fiddling with it..it breaks and falls over.

Mazda doesn't want to cover it 3k miles out of bumper to bumper warranty and says it isn't a powertrain issue even though my car wouldn't move. I had to call them myself, Wayne Mazda was not very helpful with this which is odd because they were a little more helpful with the LSD issue on my Mazdaspeed Protege out of warranty (still a nightmare though but I forgave Mazda).

To add insult to injury Wayne Mazda originally quoted me $550 for a repair then went down to like $400 when I balked (which is funny because the guy knows he can't screw me yet tried to). I went to go pick up my keys and get it towed out and realized the techs had disassembled the whole reverse lockout thing and just stuck the stick in the stub where the whole thing goes into by the ball joint....so it was driveable just had to be careful with first obviously lol.

Anyway guess i'm off to protege garage to get a replacement and do it myself but I was looking to get a car in less than a year's time and it certainly won't be a Mazda. I filed a claim with the BBB also just for good measure though even though they've already lost my confidence as a customer I did it out of principle. I've had lots of issues with this car and have taken it in stride, cd player(they never returned the cd's in the original when they replaced it), rattling on cold start, failing fuel pump which almost got me into an accident more than once but this is the last straw.

Sorry for the long rant but figured this might be useful to read for some and was rather cathartic. Long time Mazda owner and LOVER has a broken heart...probably going to get a Hyundai..at least I can rely on the warranty.

With respect, I really don't think the shifter is part of the power train. The tranny, yes. Shifter, no. Others may disagree. There are wear items in the shift mechanism, especially bushings, and parts that can fatigue or bend during use. Not siding with Mazda, please understand, but I do think the claim is "iffy at best.

I do like your idea of fixing it yourself as Mazda's stealer dealer is trying to **** you on the cost. Don't expect another brand's dealer to treat you much better. If you think the grass is always greener . . . it usually ain't.

I say this recognizing that I'm probably about to replace my wife's 8 year old Volvo S80 (also turned out to be bullet proof reliable) with a Hyundai Genesis, just due to the age and mileage, and Volvo now being owned by a company in a communist country (China).

I'm sorry you had so much trouble with your car and that dealer. Some individual models are just not the same quality as others. I guess I got a good one. Never been back to the dealer for anything, never had to repair or replace anything so far except my personal decision to recently upgrade the stock rear motor mount because I was having trouble WOT flat shifting the 2-3 shift after 50,000 miles on the car.

I wouldn't give up on Mazda because of one experience.

Thanks for your reply and I do understand the shifter mechanism is a bit of a grey area. Mazda corporate does not believe this to be a "design issue" but I would also disagree with that because I have seen many others get stuck...not broken like mine but still I'm sure there are others. Honestly a piece of plastic should not be in the shifter design that is in such a high wear area in my opinion.

Also being just out of the warranty....y'know. As I said though it really isn't because of "one" experience as I have very very very very long history with Mazda and had some issues before with warranty work that ended up keeping me happy in the end but a bit miffed with my Mazdaspeed Protege and now with the Speed3 as I mentioned above..and also just remembered I had to take it in because the vanity mirror's light stopped working also, not a big deal but combine that with this and things like the fuel pump that was dangerous and yeah...

I'm not really expecting better treatment per se, but having a clear cut much longer warranty such as Hyundai would keep this type of situation from happening to me and like I said not really into the scene anymore and probably going to be engaged, start a family before long so reliability is becoming a bigger issue with me

Going through a Bankruptcy right now also so couldn't have happened at a worse time for me mentally or financially of course too. The car is actually a Chase lease as I knew I'd want to turn it in before the end of any powertrain warranty expiring anyway.

The way that Mazda corporate and especially Wayne Mazda handled the situation is what put me off the most though as I basically had to hound them while I was already inconvenienced with having no car.

Hey while we're on the subject of my shifter, anyone have opinions on the E4P shifter? I'm attracted to it's price on PG..

Yeah, it sucks...but don't let one scummy dealer sour you on the brand.

Also, warranties have mileage/date limits for a reason. Yes, it sucks that you were only a few thousand miles out of warranty...but where would you draw the line at an acceptable "out of warranty" period? Would everyone absolutely agree with you? The point of the limits is to draw that line.

I have the E4P sts and I haven't had any problems with it. Heck, why spend about double on a name?
