Let's talk Radar Detectors for a bit, shall we?

Passport 8500 here. I has saved my ass more times than I can remember. Sure the V1 has all the arrows and fancys s***, plus it weighs about 1000 lbs, but the 8500 is more than sufficient, and has paid for itself in full! (thumb)

Valentine (the actualy man himself) was co-maker of the passport. So its up to you... pretty much the same i would think, unless you want the arrows to tell you where they are. I personally would go with the valentine, IF i had to pick one. I hear from word of mouth they are the better for false alarms. This to me is worth it, so when you drive by a mall or something the detector doesnt go nuts.

The escort has always won the comparisons plus the 8500 can be linked to the passport lazer blocking system, the ZR3, so they can't tag you with that which if you have ever been hit by lazer you know its impossible to react in time to aviod a ticket.

Not to mention escort makes the best detector in the world the SRX!

I dont know about the escort, but the valentine detects behind you as well.

Yes, the 8500 has several rear channels it monitors aswell each detecing all forms of radar and laser.

Hit www.radartest.com

apparently the escort can pick up Ka over 3.2 miles before the valentine.

i own a valentine one. there is no substitute. i traded passport 8500 for a week with a friend. when we traded back he put his on ebay and bought a v1. to me the diffrence is night and day between v1 and any other detector i've used. i've run bel/escort/passport/uniden/cobra and the liking. few higher end models too.

plus 399 may be higher for the average driver but it won't be outdated. you can always upgrade for a fee

V1

Defintely V1. Been using it for almost a year. Has not let me down yet. It has already paid for itself.

i beat you all i have the Phanton 2. thing is awsome. it's a great radar detector and it jams cops radars too. so it's all good

Detectors in Ontario?

As long as we are on the subject, does anyone who lives where detectors are against the law actually use them? What's the penalty if you're caught? I understand that a cop can detect if you have a radar detector in your car, but I also know some models can block that detection; anyone know which ones?

All escort radar detectors are setectable.
So the 8500 can not be seen by any law enforcement.

what to do, what to do......? I see that Best Buy has the (Escort) Passport 8500, and I have an account with them. Uh oh!!! Ha! I have read the reviews (magazines and peoples personal), and it really seems like 6 of one - 1/2 dozen of the other on which is really better; the V1 or the Passport 8500.

After being a silly ass in 1986, and having my (original) Passport stolen out of my car (my own damn fault), I haven't really considered another detector. That was $300 flushed + $100 for another driver's side window. Was I pissed!!

But now; I'm wanting to get another.....

Cheers!

Does the V1 have a case? Or is one available? Thanks!

Damn, I just found out today that the 8500 has a built in Voltage Meter! Kool! I drive around with it on Volt Meter, and when it detects something, it switches to show you what's up.

Has saved my ass, and the distance warning is off the hook! Go get it!

Note: Disable "X" band if you get it. Leave it enabled, and you will see what I mean!
