Imperialism

1. the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.
2. advocacy of imperial interests.
3. an imperial system of government.
4. imperial government.
5. British. the policy of so uniting the separate parts of an empire with separate governments as to secure for certain purposes a single state.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=imperialism

England, Spain, Portugal....These were imperialist countries.

An imperialist country has colonies around the globe. The imperialist countries try to expand their empire. The United States has never been an imperialist country, at least not for long. The westward migration in the 1800s was not imperialism.

The U.S. has more pull than anyone around the world and we do protect our interests, but find me colonies that we have. We are far from isolationists and far from imperialists.

You actually think that the situation in Iraq makes the U.S. an imperial nation?

Ok, I was looking at your own interpretation, but Mr. Webster is adequate I guess....

There is nothing wrong in standing behind your country in a time of war, especially if you see or have seen what is going on behind the scenes on the ground over there. I have and a number of people on this forum have seen this first hand.(first)

I wrote what I wrote before I went to dictionary.com. I just posted that for the hell of it.

The U.S. is not an imperial nation, sorry to prove you wrong.

one thing is standing behind the troops that do only what they're told, another thing is to stand behind the idiocy that is the decision of this country to go to war.

I say give it time. It's a slippery slope and I hope that the right decisions are made in the future to avoid it.

The US has exhibited imperialistic characteristics in the past - they've done many times under different guises - you may see that in one light ("we're protecting our interests", etc), and I may see it another. Academics and poli-sci's have argued about it for a while yet. I certainly doubt we'll resolve it on here..

I don't think you've "proven" anything, however.

Purposely overthrowing a government that was installed by the same nation years ago is a tactic similar to a Roman Caesar installing a Roman governor or a British monarch installing a colonial governor in a colony.

Here's a good op. piece and food for thought

Rome collected TAXES and had Governors. That is a humungous difference and is absolutely nothing like what is going on in Iraq. Rome expanded their empire, claiming territory, the U.S. does not.

The Bath govt. wasn't installed either. They took power, actually killing people to do it. The U.S. DOES install governments though, and it is needed.

(post edited because it sounded rude to a worthy debater)

So does the US.

Who makes THAT decision?

Typical dumbass...just because I don't approve of some of the things our government does I am anti-american. Free speech is a foundation that our country was built on. Get with the program.

I have been here 46 years..I don't think I will be leaving soon. Also, would you rather the Government Censor what we can say?

dissent is democracy

Support the troops, keep their old ladies sexually satisfied while they're away.

**** an Iraq !

If it werent for all the oil underneath it, noone would have even cared when Iraq invaded Kuwait. And we surely wouldnt be occupying it now.

Go Greed! erm, I mean America!

I hate that money if valued over life.
That image is valued over substance.
That incarceration is valued over treatment.
That treatment is valued over cure.
That children are considered consumers.
That our lifestyle is made possible because of suffering.
That my government kills people that I don’t think should be killed.
I hate that I hear about American soldiers being tortured to death and know that it’s our own damn fault!
That our government no longer represents the people.
That it’s cheaper and easier to eat an unhealthy diet
That debt is a way of life for far too many people.
More than anything, I hate that the media spicket tells my kids that all these things are the way it should be.

Don’t mend that shirt, throw it away, buy a new one, buy it today!
A gram is better than a damn.
Smoke that purple stuff.
Let’s think outside the box.

One more thing, I don’t hate America. I love America. That’s why I get mad about what’s being done to it.

The Green Zone is a safe zone. It has nothing to do with anything.

Other than the fact that it is an OCCUPIED SECTION of Bagdad that the general public is not allowed into.

So I guess the rest of Bagdad is "UNSAFE" then. At least you admit that.
