Leaking fluid could hurt the 2008 CX-9's ability to stop

Probably happened to one NHTSA employees government paid vehicle. And now 36,999 of us will have to deal with a few hours at the dealership.

if you mashed the brakes and it seemed like your abs was not kicking in, your 9 was slowing, and you had all your weight on that pedal but you were getting no reaction from the abs, then you may. If you hit the car(s) in front of you before you could exercise that much pressure with your foot and even make that kind of determination of whether or not the abs was kicking in, then you were just too close. If you are moving forward at any speed oh lets say faster than 25 and you suddenly mash the brake pedal, you will feel the abs working, and see the abs light activate as it works.

"When brake fluid leaks into the vacuum booster the driver can experience reduced brake effectiveness which can result in extended stopping distance."

The leak happened to my '08 this past winter and the dealer (Garden City) didn't find anything wrong even though I told them about the extended braking distance and pedal sponginess when I brought it for 30K maintenance.

The problem was only discovered when I had to bring it to our family mechanic for a separate issue later in spring, but by then the warranty was over. The leak was pretty bad too which almost resulted in a couple of near misses. (pissed)

Well that sucks...how much did it cost you? Can you ask Mazda to pay now?

I wasn't quoted the repair cost, but I suspected it wasn't low as my mechanic asked me then if the car was still under warranty. In the end, I believe he swallowed the cost as he didn't charged me extra.

Obviously, I'm really hoping this investigation will turned into a recall, so that my guy can get reimbursed.

Mine just started acting up this week. Spongy pedal with almost no braking action, then brakes work normally with increasing pedal pressure. Fluid level had dropped. I first thought I just needed to bleed the brakes, I flushed the fluid and replaced it with new. Symptoms remained the same. I suspected a problem with the vacuum booster next and just logged on the forum to see if this is a known issue and voila, here is this thread. Mine is an 07, so I don't think this issue is limited to 08's. Now, how to get Mazda to fix it before the NHTSA finishes its investigation and announces a recall?

Interesting...I changed the pads on my CX-9 and noticed the breaking distance seemed to increase. I replaced both the OEM pads and rotors with the centric rotors and hawk street/sport pads. I was blaming it on the pads, but I wonder if pushing the caliper piston back in causes this issue to occur?

Just as a follow up, Mazda made this a service campaign and I sent in my receipts from Sept 2011 and just got a check for $675! Way to go Mazda, better late than never. FWIW, just turned 90K miles and this was the only repair this car has needed.

It should not have anything to due with pushing the piston in on the caliper. There is no other way to fit the new pads on new rotors without compressing the piston back inward. Your stopping distance issue might actually be the pads like you said. I noticed a slightly longer stopping distance when I went with ceramic pads. The benefit is that I have little to no brake dust build up.

I had the brake booster leak as well. Happened when I was upstate NY skiing. Dashboard lit up like christmas tree. added fluid to master cylinder and was able to get home and get it to dealer.

Hi Todd
I have 2008 cx-9 and when I apply brake I hear hissing sound like air leak. I would appreciate if you can share your experience about what you have had to present to dealer in order to get them fixed without any charge.

Really appreciate your help

Thanks
