This lady got 6 years probation for yelling at her kid. What in the hell is wrong with this world??? That makes no sense........if this is right then all of my friends' parents would get the death penalty :)

How can this possibly be against the law.......our legal system has got to be the biggest joke on earth:

1. you can sue McDonalds if you spill hot coffee on yourself (and win)

2. you can sue BIC if your kid on purposely lights a fire and burns down your house (and win)

3. you can get away with murder even if your blood is at the crime scene (OJ)

4. you can avoid the death penalty or jail time if you're insane or retarded (never made sense to me)

5. and now you can get 6 years probation and pretty much mess up your career prospects for life because you yelled at your kid.

I'm calling a do-over on our justice system.........

that is horrible. I would like to hear the verbage used in the tape first before saying it's unfounded.. If she threatened her life than that sould be punished, but not threats of spanking!!

Sounds like a white trash family to me. There's probably a bigger story behind this. The cops were probably tired of going out there on domestic violence calls and the phone call was the final straw. Also look where it took place....Decatur, Georgia....home of the confederate memorial.

Regardless, 6 years probation is kind of harsh. But you are right...our justice system is a joke.

Sounds like you made an assumption based on nothing! Could be an African American family you know. The woman's name is Venus. Could be that she is asian, middle eastern, could be that she is loaded. You really don't know do ya.

Yeah our legal system is a joke and I am hoping your previous comment was too!

Actually, a bigger problem in our country is uninformed people!

First let me say that verbal abuse can be just as psychologically damaging as physical abuse. It sounds like you don't have children, or could be child yourself. In any case, here is a bit of education:

1.) Coffee that produces 3rd degree burns through clothes is too hot, that's negligence on the sellers side.
2.) The kid didn't burn down his house, his pajamas were accidentally lit on fire by his three-year-old brother playing with the lighter. The family did not win the suit against BIC (even though BIC should have child-proofed their lighters). The family did win against the manufacturer of the pajamas, as they were supposedly flame retardant.
3.) It's called jury nullification, read into it...I agree it's B.S. but it works both ways. Plus the prosecution did a piss-poor job in the case. You can only render a verdict on the evidence presented.
4.) It's not like you get to home. Most often the criminally insane get locked up for a long time in state institutions.
5.) Again, verbal abuse.... threathening your child in the manner described is inexcusable. She got lucky with no jail. However the real travesty of justice is that the woman may regain custody of the three children!

Assumptions, assumptions....it just irks me when people assume that because someone is from the south they have to be ignorant and stupid, white trash, etc. I, for one, am proud to be from the south.

Okay, now that that's out of the way...there is a lot to this story left untold. We don't know what she said, what was threatened exactly, etc. iam1ru12 made a lot of good points.

1 & 2... common sense was not excercised, enough said... basically in #1, everyone civilized knows that coffee is HOT... and for #2, the parents should keep lighters out of reach!

as for this b**** that got the probation, it was deserved because of the CONTEXT it... she said things she shouldn't have when disciplining a child... obviously all parents yell at their kids, but there's a line on what you should say and what you shouldn't

On the tape, the woman called the girl names and threatened to beat her. She said she hated her and told her she should have been left in a foster home.

If that is true and she said those things to her kid. Then she got off easy in my eyes. verbal abuse is as bad if not worse then physical abuse can be. Just ask my brother and I how bad it can **** you up.

On #1 I would agree if it was you standard cup coffee. However this woman received 3rd degree burns on her thighs. She was also wearing sweatpants. It's not like she spilled it on exposed skin. She spilled it on herself while taking the lid off, while the car was NOT moving. At that point the coffee is hotter than any rational person would expect it to be. That is the basis of the verdict against McDonalds.

Keeping lighters away from children, pretty self explanitory! However they should child proof. Not everyone that has children are good parents (care-givers), just look at the case in discussion here. Do you think this woman did much to "child proof" her home?

Ok, I've finished rambling.
