so Im comparing these three tires

Kumho Ecsta MX

Falken Azenis ST115(sports are bad in wet conditions I think)

Yoko AVS Sport

now I don't believe the Azenis ST115, even though I'm sure they're great tires, are in the same league as the previous 2.

As far as the other 2...
Tirerack has some pretty extensive testing results and the Kuhmo's pretty much beat the Yoko's in all performace categorys, plus they seem to have about 40 higher treadwear rating and are less expensive.
Am I missing something?

also I'm fine running 215/45/17's aren't I?

i believe both the Khumos and Yokohamas r great tires and have always heard good things about them, so either would be a good choice. but i have learned that treadwear ratings r given among a companies own brand, for example one brand tire with a 300 treadwear rating wont be the same as some other brands 300 treadwear rating. so that means u cant expect both to last the same amount of time as each other. i hope that helped any.

I'm going with the Falkens I think...$99/tire shipped from discount tire...great deal, and they are all about quietness with performance as well...

They don't make a Falken Azeni in 215/45/17s or I would own them already.
I will most likely be getting the Kumho MXs for next year, and if I stay with 17s, they will be 215/45/17, just like the tires I have on now.
You can EASILY run 215/45/17s on the stock rims. You will get ZERO rubbing. Trust me, I've been over some pretty serious stuff and had no problems.
The ride is a little smoother than the stock tires, and the larger diameter puts a couple less miles on the odo.

Oh, sorry about that, I meant the Azeni Sport. Its a little different tire, and a lot stickier. The Kuhmo MX is supposed to be even better, and gets better with both age and temperature. I'll probably end up with the MXs. I have Kumhos on the car right now, the cheap 711s, and I am getting great performance out of them. I can only imagine what the Mxs will do for me!
As for buying tires online, yes, you pay to get them mounted and balanced at the shop of your choice. That's how they cost so little. They don't have to worry about that part of the job.

Ok, cool, thanks cjs, I know you're into the auto-x so I trust you on tire selection, but i'm looking for ride noise levels to be down, and this Azeins looks like it will fit the bill, and still be able to give some decent performance and good wear (360 rating, A, A). and txmzdspd2gen, discount tire direct is now FREE shipping...and I'll have them mounted and balanced at a local shop.

fwiw, Azenis are Just as competent as ANY sports tire in the rain. in the dry? They would OWN anything short of an R-Compound race tire. Hands down.

I drove thru one of the wettest winters in Seattle (area) history one Azenis. They performed as well as any other 'sport/racing' tire I've used. They DID NOT perform like "aquatread" or something...but they were FAR from dangerous, etc. Most Local Autocrossers who run R compounds, use Azenis as their 'wet-weather' tire.
