Does the key that comes w the slime-line credit card remote have a chip in it that is needed to start the car?

I know the remote has a chip and battery and needs programming, but does the detaching key have anything special too?

I can get a duplicate key made, but if I do not have the remote w me, can I start the car w the remade key?

thx

Yes the slimline key has a chip on it and can only be programmed while programming the whole thing..aka ($300 to the dealer)

Well, I wish you were wrong, but thx for the clarification...I think I am going to get a door key made for $4.00, put it on a key chain and leave the chip key in the glove compartment...so, if I loose my only working remote [that I just bought bc my other two crapped out], then I'll at least have a way to start the car...

I'll never buy another mazda again for such a ****-job on the remote cost and programming...furthermore, I would never buy any make/model w such a crappy set-up...really leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Most any vehicle above a base model will have some sort of chip/coding in them these days as an anti-theft measure. $300 key programming is pretty standard across the board at any dealership for any late model vehicle unfortunately. It's a state of the industry to help curb vehicle thefts and thus lower insurance premiums.

My 2004 Mazda 6 had a chip in the key, and my wife's VW GTI does as well. Pretty much standard these days.
