Key Fob Replacement

OK, when I received my new Mazda in Germany (shipped from the US), one of the key fobs was lost by the shipper. I have received the claim payout, and thought I could just call my dealer in the US and have them program/send me a new key fob.

Apparently, they can't just do that. They need both keys at the same time because if I use the new one it will cancel out the old one?

Anyone been through the process of Key replacement? The dealer here in Germany has ridiculous pricing, and I'd rather, at least buy a 'blank' key from the US Dealer and have the German Dealer program it when it gets here.

Thoughts? Suggestions
, any experience out there? What a PITA. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you received a claim pay out what is the problem? Did you not receive enough? You can't fault them for requesting the original. It is part of their protocol to ensure keys aren't being stolen.

Problem is if I go through the German dealership (key fob and programming) I will pay hundreds more. I'm trying not to go back to the shipper for more if I don't have to.

Key Fob Replacement

When the key fob of our BMW 528i got accidentally run over by our CR-V, we bought a replacement from our BMW dealer. You do need to provide a proof of ownership with VIN, although I didn't as these people know me in person. So if you can send a relative with your car title to a Mazda dealer on the States side, you should have no problem to make one. At least in my case the second key wasn't required to program the replacement key fob although they did need it eventually as they screwed up the programming with all the BMW computers and technical support from BMW USA!

Here is the FAQ from Mazda USA website:

"How do I obtain a new key for my vehicle?
New Mazda vehicle keys may be obtained directly from your local authorized Mazda Dealer. In order to provide replacement keys, ownership information will need to be verified in person. Contact your dealer for specifics regarding owner verification. Please note: For security reasons, the Mazda Customer Experience Center cannot provide key codes by telephone, email or online chat.

Have you tried online?

Yep, you were told correctly...Both are needed during a re-program.
I once owned a Mini Cooper( BMW) that came with only one key fob...What a royal pain that one was...the dealership was over 100 miles from me! :(
I am not sure who ships outside the USA, but there are a lot of alternatives!
You did not indicate which key fob you have ...or keyless?
Here is one of the 1st that popped up on my search...Keyless though!

Thanks for the info all! I have home-leave after Christmas, I'll see my dealer and have my set of keys taken care of then....

Hope I don't lose the set I already have before then! (nervous)

The key fobs are not programmable after they leave the factory. The car is programmed to accept the new key fobs, not the other way around. That is why all key fobs must be present to add a fob. A replacement key fob must be ordered from the factory special to work with your car without programming the car. I was told this by my dealer when I got a spare key fob.

Oh crap. So I can't just go to the dealer on home leave with the other key? I need the vehicle AND the keys?

Whether the new key fob needs to be programmed or the car computer needs to be reprogrammed to accept the new key fob, your car does need to be present to program a new or replacement key fob.
