Just got back from my 1st road trip in CX9

I just took the family ( me, wife, 5yo and 9mo ) from Pittsburgh to Myrtle Beach. I make this trip annually and sometimes twice a year so I know it pretty well.

The CX9 proved a very worthy steed for this trip. I really needed the extra cargo room with all of the asstd. baby stuff that you have to haul on a trip like this. The trip down was uneventful but we did catch some fog in WV that the HIDs made a lot more bearable. Used all 3 cigarette lighters the whole trip to power my Bluetooth Ipod adapter, Garmin GPS, and a heated cooler full of warm bottles for the baby. RES was great at keeping the 5yo entertained and she really didnt complain much the whole trip. The seats up front for comfy for myself and the wife too. Here are a few pros and cons I found

Pros

Cruise maintained at steady speed with very little variance despite a lot of ups and downs in WV
Very comfortable and dual zone climate control kept me cool and wife warm
HIDs gave great vision at night
BSM sensors keep an eye on blind spots for me which helped a lot with the RES down and stuff piled up high in back
Yoko Parada SpecXs performed flawlessly. Dealt with a lot of rain on return trip and they gripped perfectly. The car felt like it was on rails. I'm sure AWD helped too.
Very versatile seating arrangement once we got there. Had lots of family there too so the ability to seat 7 came in very handy.
Tranny did a decent job of keeping RPMs down except for major hill climbs
Wife was able to jump in back seat between the girls to feed the baby and I could keep driving after letting her switch seats. Saved lots of time that way.

Cons

MPG was a big disappointment. I understand that city driving results in low mpg but i hoped to average over 20 mpg highway. I only got about 18
Windshield kept fogging up the whole trip. Almost had to run defrosters non stop until I figured out to turn on defrost and then shut the whole system down. This allowed the vented air to hit the windshield and kept it clear for the most part afterwards.
When climbing long hills at speed the tranny kept dropping to 4th gear making the rpms skyrocket when it didnt really seem necessary.
Wind noise - The windows seemed very noisy at speed.
NAV\Stereo - Hate to keep harping on this but I hate having to use a 3rd device to skip songs on my ipod when my Nissan used to let me use the steering wheel controls.
Never used nav as maps are so out of date. At least my Garmin allows lifetime updates.

Overall it was a great trip and the CX9 worked very well. I was glad to have it and did not miss my Altima much except for the long hill climbs. ( The VQ + CVT combo was great in that car) I was glad to have all of the extra room and seats, just found a few areas where some improvement would go a long ways. I look forward to my next trip later this year and the rest of my family does too.

How did you get 18mpg on highways?
How fast were you going? 80+mph?

I can easily get 21-22mpg at 70-75mph. not even with cruise control, which I rarely use.

I too would have expected you to top 20 mpg on all highway cruising. I will set the cruise control for flat trips but when the going gets hilly I turn it up for the uphills. I'd rather be pro-active with my foot than let the cruise control be reactive. On a long uphill the cruise control might stay in 6th while the car slowly loses speed. Then, inevitably near the top of the hill, the car will downshift to regain speed. I'd rather gauge the hill myself and try to keep it in 6th if I know the top of the hill is coming soon.

We've made 2 trips from Ohio to Florida in our CX-9. Rolling near 80mph in most areas we've easily topped 20mpg. It's dismal in the grand scheme of things, but pretty good compared to the 18 you are seeing.

What kind of tires?

I did break 20mpg on one 1/2 tank coming out of WV into VA and NC, but that is mostly a downhill slope. I was using cruise and typically set it at about 5 mph over the limit. There were a few stretches where I picked up a good "pace car" and went 80+ letting them run any possible speed traps for me, but that was mostly on the trip home. I always push harder on the trip home than I do on the trip down.

I did have a lot of stuff in the back so maybe that factored in. I'm also thinking that the winter blend gas has always given me lower mpgs than the summer blend. I topped off the tank after every diaper \ bathroom stop which equated to about 1/2 a tank or so at a time. Maybe the fact that I never let the tank run down may have had some effect as well. I was carrying most of the weight of a full tank as opposed to letting it run down and losing that weight.

Not sure there.

Parada Spec X 4 brand new ones all the way around

Interesting. I'll be rolling a set of those soon, I'll have to see if it affects the mileage. The numbers I've seen were with a fully loaded car too, including the wife, 3 kids, luggage, external hitch mounted carrier, car seats, etc.

Spec-X is not the problem.
I have them on for 25K miles. It makes no difference from OE tires.

RoadKing, I think there is just no way to get good mileage through WV on 79. I take it that's the road you take through WV.

We go up to Murraysville about 2-3x per year from Kentucky, and I try to go up through Cincinatti and Columbus if at all possible just because i HATE 79 in WV.

With that said, my 9 hardly ever goes into 4th up hills, with the exception of when I filled the entire rear to the roof with reloading and ammo stuff, lots of lead and steel, including ammo boxes, etc. That trip from VA to KY was LOADED DOWN.

When we took our 03' Altima 2.5S through WV, it would jump from 5th gear to 3rd all the time... CX9 is sooooo much better having a 5 and 6 gear.

I haven't had any issues with the windshield fogging up.

Where in Pittsburgh are you?

I do normally take 79 to 19 to 77 through WV. I first noticed the constant downshifts to 4th coming out of NC into VA on 77, but that is a pretty long grade. It happened several other times in WV notably right after crossing the VA border heading towards Beckley.

I am not a fan of driving through WV due to all of the elevation changes, but the alternative adds a couple more hours on a 9-10 drive to start with. Beautiful state, just a lot more work to drive through.

I am south of Pittsburgh in eastern Washington Co. From my house I can see, Allegheny Co from back porch, and Westmoreland & Fayette from the front. Murrysville is about 30 mins down I70 and up PA 66 from me.

I am very pleased with the tires so far, and do not think they would affect mpg that much. I'm thinking it was probably the winter blend gas + the 10% ethanol that you cannot get away from. I did find a couple more gas receipts that I misplaced and they brought my average closer to 19 than 18. I just read all of the stories on here about consistently hitting 20+ mpg highway and was disappointed that I did not. I was happy to get one 1/2 tank that broke the 20mpg barrier, I just wish that more of them did. $4 a gallon is painful, but at least its not as bad as out west.

I will be taking another family trip to Williamsburg VA later this summer. Hopefully I will get some better MPGs then, but I am sure that the AC will be on full force most of that trip, so I am not that optimistic.

I'm very jealous of your Parada Spec-X's. I had them on my Toyota and have to wait for these Goodyears to die. They are such an awesome tire

Since I got my Spec-X almost 3 years ago, I have been checking tirerack.com.
So far, I haven't found any better all-season tires to buy from price-performance angle.
My personal experiences with them also confirm the high review ranking on tirerack.com.
If I have to buy a set today, Spec-X will be my choice again.

I agree with ceric completely. Love the spec-x tires so far. I just wish we had a little more snow this past winter to test them in that environment. The best tire out there for the money. Too many good reviews to overlook or discredit.

I had Conti DWS extreme tires on my Altima that were the best performing tire I have ever run. The paradas (so far) are just as good on my CUV as the Contis were on the sedan.

We just purchased a used 2011 CX-9 Touring with 32000 on it and we are taking it to McAllen Texas from Louisville KY. McAllen is about 20 miles north of Mexico so it will be a big trip. Thanks for the info on your trip.

RoadKing... had a roadforce balance & 4 wheel alignment done and took a road trip up here to Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh now! (near Murraysville/Monroeville). Roadforce balance really helped smooth out some vibrations @ 70/80 mph.

Welcome back to the Burgh. You back here for the 4th or just a few days?

I've never heard of a roadforce balance. Is that done at a dealer or some other specific location?

I plan on getting my alignment checked annually. The local dealer in greensburg runs a special for a 4 wheel alignment for $60 and I usually get it done then. These 20" tire are too expensive to take any chances on a bad alignment ruining them. Not to mention potential issues with AWD.

We are just up here until Sunday then headed back to KY. Go to the website for Hunter roadforce balancer. It will tell you all about it. Gets a better high speed balance for interstates. Put in your zipcode for a hunter roadforce balancer near your zip. Well headed to sandcastle in a little bit. Vacation is great.

Just got back from my 2nd trip, and averaged 21MPG highway on both the way down and the way back. Much happier with this result. It had to be a combo of winter blend gas \ WV mountains that killed my MPG last trip. I went to Williamsburg Va this time and the terrain was much flatter.

If I could have avoided the traffic on I95 I probably would have had an even higher average.

We did a roundtrip from Orlando, FL to Toronto, Ontario, Canada during the month of July. I do this trip once a year. The CX-9 was fully packed and I also had a Thule Evolution cargo box mounted on the roof. The roundtrip averaged about 22mpg, we have a FWD. I took 95 to 26 to 77 to 79 to 90, going through GA, SC, NC, VA, WV, PA, NY and back. I actually enjoyed WV, kept me awake with all the twists and turns. I drove at 5mph over speed limit most of the way. Still on the OEM tires, the CX-9 was comfortable to drive.

Oh, and I turned off cruise control wherever the road had an undulating terrain. I found that gear hunting was minimized when preparing for uphill climbs and I pretty much let the CX-9 coast when going downhill.
