Just bought a Protege5 (Questions)

Crap, you are in Utah, had a 88 Corrolla, and got in a reck then bought a Protege.

Im in Utah, own an 88 Corolla, just bought a Protege yesterday (02 LX not P5 unfortunately) but I have not been in a reck... knock on wood I guess.

Where in Utah are you?

and welcome to the forums!

I'm in north ogden, yeah I had a Corolla 88 SR5 Coupe, car had ZERO power (90HP LOL) but it was very reliable. I got hit on 1900W on July 12, 2005.

I ended up with a ruptured aorta, broken ribs, punctured lung, crushed pelvis, factured skull. The heart injury only has a 3 to 5% survival rate. I guess I'm pretty lucky to be alive to see a newer car. (drive)

I might do some minor mods such as intake and exhaust, but turbo is out of the question I already have my turbo car (95 Eagle Talon TSi AWD).

And from what I've read it looks like intake modification doesn't do much if anything at all to boost power, does exhaust?

I NOTICED A DIF WHEN I DROVE MY CAR AFTER I INSTRALLED AN INTAKE NOW I AM GOING TO PUT HEADERS ON IT.

underdrive pulley works for both auto and manual. You should also consider a lightweight flywheel.

Jeesh, sounded like you got pretty messed up. I feel like Im playing Russian roulette when I leave the house with that 88 Corrolla... its just so small and old, Im sure that thing doesnt have 1/10 the safety technology that the Protege has!
I cant stand it, its the 3 speed auto. Bought it couple months ago with 71k miles for 1600. Should last another 1 7 years at that rate! LOL.

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.

As everyone else has said, welcome to our crazy corner of the 'net. Once you get in, you ain't never gettin' out! :D

That being said, I LOVE my P5 as well - I'm actually on my second one. First was auto (yuck!); ended up trading it in on a manual and I've never been happier. If you're looking for something to give you thrills going down the straightaway, you bought the wrong car. BUT, if you're looking for a car to put a huge grin on your face everytime you take a corner, you've hit the jackpot. Trust me, before long you'll be looking for the twistie roadsin your area... :)

threadjack - Steve, remind me again, what exactly does an underdrive pulley do/improve? /threadjack

I took the car out for a spin today to go pay off the car, I must say it handles better than my other cars (88 Corolla RIP, 95 Talon). I am GLAD its not fast on the straight away, saves me from getting anymore speed contest tickets.

Lighter and smaller pulley = less power used by engine to drive accessory pulleys. Some say it's detrimental, but I have yet to see anyone with a udp report an oil/water pump, alternator, or a/c failure. Basically it frees up hp much the same way as a lightweight flywheel.
