Jspec ECU without all other parts

Hi all,

I've got the J-Spec cams on order and have been told at this stage the ECU will be my big restriction. The question is would the ECU from the FS-ZE engine improve my power if I don't also have the pistons and intake manifold? In other words do I need all the parts, Cams & intake manifold& and pistons, to use the J-Spec ECU?

I don't know where I get aforementioned ECU yet but before I start looking I need to know if I need to get the other parts for it to have an effect.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

i think your problem would definatly be in the ignition timing. different map for different static compression.

so if I interpret this properly the J-Spec ECU isn't realy a viable solution. As a result I'll have to keep looking :)

Thanks for the quick response and helpful comments

Dave

the ECU from japan is a different OBD encryption than ours, it is not at all "plug and play". It would be incredibly expensive for starters, plus you'd have to truly tear into the electrical system and do some surgery, and a minor concern afterwards would be passing any sort of emissions test.

If you want more horsepower, the JDM ECU is not the answer.

Thanks Captain

If I get the intake manifold, and pistons from the FS-ZE will I reach the 170hp claimed by that engine without the ECU? From what I understand I probaly wouldn't. Is a $1000 Haltech the only solution?

IT IS NOT 170HP. It's 170ps, which equals about 163-165hp, depending on which conversion figure you use.

I'm running away

My ignorance is being highlighted with each sucessive post I make:'(

Thanks for the info on the ps suffix. I had wondered what that meant.(bowdown)

don't run away - unlike protegeclub, we're mostly semi friendly here :) (gonna get flamed for that one...)

to answer your question, with just the pistons, the manifold, cams and other assorted NA wares, you will not reach the same horsepower numbers as the Sport20 Familia (as the car is called in Japan). And for the costs associated with getting those said parts into your car, you will be better off going with a Spool Stage 1 Turbo or a Flyin' Miata turbo kit. More power for less money.

A good person to PM about these kinds of mods would either be LinuxRacer or CHDesign. Check out the forced induction forums as well.

well christ ken, it seems to me that we had this conversation about an hour ago in another protege5.... odd.....

lol thanks Captain. is it that easy to see which Board I come from, that I'm that afraid of flames? :)

Actually I came here first with this question to avoid the certain flames you get with questions on another nameless board.

I've thought about turbo and even investigated the various manufacturers. My main concern is being able to get a turbo installed properly. People have said I could install it myself but wisdom includes knowing your limitations, and I'm no mechanic :)

Thanks for the Friendly help, I'll continue my quest to add horsepower to a car I love all other aspects of.
