JDM FP-DE swapped into 2002 Protege

So I posted in Feb about my FSde going out.

I went ahead and purchased a JDM 1.8L from JDM Engine Zone hoping it would be a simple swap into the '02. The JDM FP-DE is a destroked FS, making the motor's bore/stroke basicly square. The JDM FP is supposed to have 130ish hp and 120ish tq. But without the JDM ECU it will not reach those numbers.

The swap went great. Had the car running again in a couple days. If you are looking for a motor swap it is a solid option.

For those concerned about the power - the motor is slower down low, but feel to pull harder up top. I do have an auto though, so I am probably not the best judge for the powerband. It gets slightly better gas mileage, though I think it would do better if I had been able to get the JDM ECU.

I had to swap exhaust manifold (though the JDM one is by far nicer), and intake manifolds (again, though the JDM one if by far nicer). I am certain we could have gotten everything to work properly on the JDM stuff if we wanted to try and work it out, but I wanted to make sure it would still pass emissions and not throw any codes.

Also if you consider this swap you will need some of the sensors off the FS, if you use the FS ECU. Be sure to check your CAS, to make sure it is the same as your stock one. Mine off the FS had to be swapped onto the FP because they were vastly different.

Besides that it was a fairly easy swap. Almost a drop in.

When the car is retired from being the DD, it will begin it's boosted life. For now it is a great auto grocery getter.

whoa nice! what about the transmission? that bolted right up too? ...because the FP uses the G25MX-R trasmission in japan and the FS uses the G15M-R transmission; i don't know if this matters or not.

Yes, I was kinda thinking the same thing. I'm doing the oppisite, going from fp-de to fs-de forged

...i wish they made forged parts for the FP; but the thing is that because the rods are shorter on the FP and not pencil thin ones like on the FS... so in theory, the FP doesn't need to have forged rods as much as the FS does.

and dacquesta1, are you getting the FS transmission?

yeah i grabbed a 5spd off a 2002 protege with 17,750 miles for 700 shipped to my work :D kick ass deal. they do make forged rods and pistons for the fp-de, though i have to say my fp hang in there for 200k miles of abuse, i revved the hell out of that engine. they are pretty thin rods as well...i attached a photo of the new k1 long rods for my fs-de next to my stock fp-de rod and piston. import performance parts dot com you can get forged internals for the fp-de from. i dont think its worth it though. it is a good motor but the f25m-r is garbage, complete garbage.

edit: pauter makes rods for the fp-de they are 792 and you can just get arias or wiseco's

so first I want to say I'm sorry that I missed your posts...for some reason I didn't get any emails. I figured no one cared about the swap(rolleyes)

anyways...CAS stands for Crank Angle Sensor. That is what we call them on Nissans. But yeah, its the crank position sensor.

The motor is bolted up to the stock 02 ES trans, with absolutely no issues. Remember that I am using a JDM motor, they are different than the USA versions.

To answer the reason I got this over an FS...I found a great deal from an importer off of ebay. It had under 35K miles and cost $700 shipped to my house. I looked for some local options, but nothing came close to this for value.

On a practical performance side. I really liked that the FP stoke/bore is square. This will allow for greater possibilities once the car is retired from DD status.

I will keep checking back if you have anymore questions. I can post some pics if you are still interested.

Hi , I'm doing the same swap from a PROTEGE5 fs to fp . Mine is a protg5 manual , I had an 2.0 that went bad and I purchased a jdm 1.8 fp-de from a guy at FORSYTH RD in Orlando! Except won't stay idle. The crankshaft pulley from jdm 1.8 has 4 points and the one from my 2.0 has multiple teeth ? I swap these and now start but won't do idle. The guy told me was a perfect fit !! I changed the exhaust manifold/ intake from the fs to the jdm fp !! Any help to put this baby on the road ?

The engines are the exact same as everywhere else in the world cept for europe which got higher compression so dont know what this JDM rubbish is about. Same cams, same pistons, same block, same rods etc etc.

In regards to carbumble, you will also need to swap the sensor over not just the trigger wheel I believe :) The JDM sensor and trigger wheel are hall effect and of a different pattern as such wont work with US 2.0 ECUs :)
