Is Upgrading Really Worth It?

I know this question has ran through everyone's minds before, but it's nice to hear from people who have experience with the PR5. I understand that it's very difficult to get power out of the PR5, even with exhaust, intake and the likes. Anyway, I just wanted to know if there is a signifigant gain in performance with all the standard upgrades, not including turbos and actual engine work. Or does it just seem like performance is boosted because the car is louder. All input is appreciated on the matter.

Thanks!

All I can say is:
Stock was doing 17.2, good driver: 16.9
With Intake and Exhaust: 16.8, good driver 16.5

You can try headers, exhaust, intake.

But there will be no difference at all.

You will need better timing and fuel control.

Going N/A is the hard way...but safer i think.;)

Personaly I think air intake is worth the price. You get better gas milage you no longer have to replace your fillter every other oil change (the cost dose add up). As far as exhaust, I have never replaced it on a vehicle I owned but I plan to for this one. Now you have to decide for yourself if an extra 5-10 hp is worth the bucks.

hello P5Mica and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!
(stash)

as for your question.....I think its really a personal preference .... if you are modding it just to get more power....then its probably not worth it....unless you are going turbo.....if you are doing it so your car will be a little different than the run of the mill P5...then yes it is.

Intake and Exhaust will give your car a little bit more pep, I think the difference is more on the psychological end then towards the dyno, but opinions vary.

If you really want performance, save a few grand and get Perfworks turbo kit like I am. His is the only system that will include a piggyback for complete engine management. My intercooler should be arriving next week - I can't wait.

welcome to the club!

I have an intake and exhaust(Injen & Mazdaspeed), and I love them. igdrasil has a point, though. It's really tough to get more power out of these cars without going FI. ...However...Put some springs and tires on that sucka and you'll feel a big difference. Mazdas have always been more of a cornering car than a 1/4 mile dragster. Hit some curves, and smile big!! :D

i just have a intake by AEM and i have noticed a big difference with it on compared to stock, i cant wait till i get the exhaust that i want and go faster!!

MP5 is definitly a corner car, i cant do it with any other car i have driven, they just sllliiiidddddeeeeeeeee, screech and smoke

i think if you emphasise the strong points in a p5, which is not power, upgrading is worthwhile.

especially if you are the type of person who gets anything, and eventually finds a way to make it better, personalize it or in any way modify it. people get new computers, then they upgrade the ram, the HD, then paint the case. its the same thing, just with cars.

some people cant leave a good thing alone. those people are car enthusiasts. :)

go n/a

Perfworks is also coming out with an n/a kit after he is finished with the turbo kit so there is hope for decent gains going n/a. i think he said that he was expecting 60-80whp out of his kit. you will notice a small differance with an intake and exhaust but dont expect anything major. from what i have heard the awr header will give you substantial gains even though their has been anybody yet to dyno it. i cannot afford a turbo so i have little choice but to build up my car gradually with i/h/e . until i start making some real money, these mods will gimme a decent performance boost while achieving better feul economy to boot:) you might also want to look into small nitrous boost(35-50hp) which will still be safe with the stock engine
