Mazda hasn't broken down 2003 sales figures by model yet, but the following was the sales ranking through December 2002 by model (US only):

1) Protege (includes Protege5) - 83,367
2) Tribute - 44,989
3) 626 - 40,689
4) MPV - 34,403
5) Mazda Truck - 20,265
6) Millenia - 18,066
7) Miata - 14,392
8) Mazda6 - 2,042

They're also doing well in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand with something called the Demio, or Mazda2. I don't know much about it other than it's fugly.

Yo don't diss the Demio. It is a hot looking little car. Saw several myself in Japan. smaller version of the protege. They even have the mazdaspeed version of it. There are other little cars over there that are 1.0l engines with turbo man. Don't diss those small cars when you haven't even seen one rolling.... Honda's scrambling and came out with a knockoff of the Demio, that's how popular Mazda's little one was. OK done with my rant...

I had an 87 GTI until the timing belt (I even changed it the year before) snapped and reduced the value of the car to about $500. I have been sad ever since that happened 8 years ago.

One of the reasons I bought the P5 is it reminded me of the driving characteristics of that GTI 16V.

And the other reason is the P5 has the same angled back antennea on the roof.
