Is it True ??? The MSP will be difficult to Mod ???

Hi guys , i'm new to the Forum :)

I'm really intrested in the new MSPs , Mostly going to be buying one.. But I hear that the Turbo is tamper proof ?? Is that true ??

Maybe i should just wait ..And see what else Mazda will come up with..

The only possible thing to put on them would be an Exhaust and Intake??DANG!

I like the fact that i don't have to worry about suspension w/ it , so i would have more time to worry about Performance and some apperence modds .. :)

Can i get it to run 14.8 in the 1/4 ??
What was the stock run on them ??

Nothing is ever tamper-PROOF... There is always a way around it :)

BTW stock run was something like 15.3 @ 90ish.. 14.8 would be easy to break with a downpipe/high-flow cat/exhaust

tires should be the same as the MP3 205/45/ZR17
Tires on the Mazdaspeed Protege are 215/45 ZR17 Bridgestone Potenza RE040s, although I'm not sure who's question you were answering.

aftermarket will be along shortly...and it should be a lot of stuff...anytime a stock car comes with a turbo it just begs to be modded and companies love it...

and for you're first question...yeah...everything can always be tampered with...

97 PGT I test drove the MSP. Its pretty good feels like my car... Well my friend that works at Mazda said all u need is a boost controller and a better BOV and u can safely boost 10 to 12 psi

add to the boost controller and BOV a larger intercooler, free flow exhaust....new downpipe, new intake and you have some serious power gains available.....be interesting to see how much the stock internals can take though.....be gettin into some serious cash if you have to upgrade the internals

turbo cars are great because simple mods will add some serious power...on the subaru wrx some people have gotten 15hp to the wheels when they changed the exhaust system...just imagine the possibilities of doing a full blown out msp

There could also be a good deal of torque to be gained just from a simple filter mod. But of course we'll have to wait until the MSP is released to see what people and companies can do with the MSP.

the msp in of itself is not tamper proof. however, if you want to keep your warranty, it is very much tamper proof. i have a feeling that mazda is going be HUGE on denying warranty work if they see you even turned a bolt the wrong way.

Boost

There will be some decent power gains from some bolt-ons but the stock 9:1 compr. ratio is not going to allow you run alot of boost.
I would guess that 14 psi or so will be the max you want to run on pump gas without detonation setting in.
This will limit its overall bolt-on power capabilites. :)

14PSI + 9:1 compression + pump gas = broken motor

Ok, I exaggerate a little, but 14PSI is right on the borderline, especially with the little IC. In wintertime, yes, you might be ok at 14PSI on 93 octane. If it's summer, and you haven't upgraded the IC, you better be running race gas.

[EDIT: This is not taking into consideration the strength concerns of the crank, rods, etc. That's a whole other can of worms.]

Not burst peoples bubbles here, but the MSP ECU will fuel shut off if it sees more than 10 psi from the turbo...That makes a boost controller essentially worthless.

I'm not going to start another arguement here about what it is already running from the factory, boost wise.

And the waste gate actuator is supposed to be tamper proof. Obviously you can tamper with it, its clipped on with plastic...However, in order to "tamper" with it, you have to break the plastic, something any dealer will notice right away and void the warranty.

Just something to think about.

The motor will NOT take 14psi. I'm not flaming the DSM guy, but he's just used to eclipse's motors and doesn't know much about the Protege. 10psi is pushing it VERY far, I would do it. The most I'd run is 8 to 9psi.

Your right about me not knowing much about the Proteges!
I dont even have my P5 yet!
It is shocking to hear that 10 psi is the edge on this car.
On my DSM I have ran 22psi on the stock long block with no problems.

There is a huge difference in the 8.1:1 CR on the DSM motor and the 9.1;1 on the Protege. That's the reason we can only go up to about 8psi without some aftermarket timing control. But here's the kicker, our cars use coil packs and not just any timing control unit will work. The only ones that will work are basically piggyback ECU's like the link. The cheap ones that MSD and Jackson Racing make won't work. Also the rods are rumored to be weak on this car. Only about 2 people have broken a rod so far though.
