Yeah I had pretty much no luck with halogen bulbs...silverstars were the worst for me.
Is it just me? The Protege5 goes thru headlight bulbs like its food

thats how i did work when i had my P5
I just installed the phillips Crystal Vision Ultra II's in my p5 after 2.5 years of what ever was in there. They are rated to last longer then the silverstars. I am very pleased witht he color temp and the visibilty they provide. They were also cheaper then the silverstars, onsale at napa for 26 bucks for the set. Time will tell how long they last but for now I'm really liking them.
Lights went out last night going up I57. Made it home safely!!!! This morning went and got new bulbs, but after starting the car and turning the lights on, passenger side started to smoke. Shut everything down and about 1/4" of the plastic around one of the connectors melted. I imagine I got some sort of surge and the breaker didn't work. Any ideas? This is only the second time I've had to replace bulbs in 156k miles. I bought basic Sylvania bulbs from Auto Zone.
I was blowing low beams every 2-3 months until I installed a pair of OSRAM Rallye 70/65 +50 H4s

P5 uses h7 for the low beam. How did you get the h4 bulbs to work?

got them about 2 years ago on ebay. slim ballast version. 6K.

The headlights went out while I was away and the wife got them replaced at the dealership. Apparently they did not transfer the adaptors with the new headlights and we no longer live in that area. Additionally they seemed to have stripped the adjustment screw on both sides. If i get new housing units, do they come with the adaptors and all parts needed?
Also since I do not want to buy new lights every few months I am considering going to the HID setup. I would like to know where I can order the focuser units that I saw on mx-p5's ride.

How did they install the replacement bulbs without the adapters????
Apparently they just crammed what ever would fit in the hole. Since then I have purchased a set that the connector will fit on but had to trim the flange sonit would sit in the hole. Needless to say the light output is all screwed up and you cannot see the road at all without the foglamps on. So we are looking to purchase new housing units since these are stripped. But that looks like it's going to be about $320 just for stock ones. If the cost to goto HID is not far from that then we may just go that way.

I still don't get it. The cable won't fit onto the bulb without the adapter. It isn't that the bulbs wouldn't fit correctly in the headlamps, they just wouldn't light at all. Are you sure the adapters aren't present? They look like part of the bulb until you pull them off.
Call around to junk yards and see if you can find some headlamp units. But check them thoroughly before buying (bulb clips present, mount for bulb clip not broken, all mounting points still attached, etc. ) Otherwise rockauto is usually a good place to buy parts.
Jesus Christ. Another damned thing that inexplicably routinely breaks on this pile of s*** car. And to top it off, it's a b**** to replace just like everything else. I just replaced both low beam bulbs in this car 6 months ago. On Friday, the driver's went out, and the passenger's went out today. Am I seriously expected to replace my headlights every 6 months???? REALLY??????? Give me a break. This is absurd.
If I ever meet the assholes who designed this car, I'll beat the s*** out of them. How the hell has Mazda gotten away with all the BS they did to this car???

Dude same crap happens to me about every three to six months but hid kit is in order to get rid of that pain in the ass.
I got 99 problems, but a burned out headlight ain't 1
