Is it just me? The Protege5 goes thru headlight bulbs like its food

My wife's driver's side was the only one to go out. Stock then the Ultra's i gave her from my car

That's when I said nuff's nuff. HID's here I come for her too

How long do the HID bulbs last? I was afraid that, being on the same set-up that the stock lights only with the ballast, they might burn often too. Still, my set-up should be installed soon after christmas... Can't wait!

owned since new and my bulbs go in 6 to 9 months, and usually in pairs. I've had both sides go out within hours of one another and always have spares with me. I've gone to cheap ebay bulbs since it didn't matter how much I've spent. Touching bulbs not an issue if you use nitrile gloves.

But you're not running HIDs are you? And if yes, what kit?

I've found that touching or not touching the bulbs has no bearing on the bulb life, because i've never shattered one because of it. It's always the filament that burns out.

oils and grease causing hot spots?

or is that a myth?
Well different materials/substances do conduct heat differently but I just can't see how a little grease/oil could cause such a drastic increase (or decrease) in heat transfer. I mean, nothing is rubbing or blowing over the bulb so surface roughness or finish don't have any impact. Sounds like a myth to me.

I know I changed my two fog light bulbs and a friend helped me out, but he didn't think it was important and manipulated the bulbs with his hands, and 2 weeks later I had a blown bulb, litteraly... Maybe is it only bad luck... Don't know! But that's my 2cents

I've decided that I am done with these stupid bulbs...I've replaced at least 3 sets since I bought this car a year and a half ago. I bought two sets of Osram Silverstars six months ago because I heard they were better than other bulbs, and I have replaced one whole set with another, and now when one of them burns out it's back to buying bulbs again. I don't understand it...this car is great, but what the hell is up with the electrical system?

I've spent as much as an HID kit costs on replacing bulbs, and now Xenon Expert has DDM slimline 35W kits for $85 shipped. HIDs for me!

No, its nota myth. They don't cause hot spots, they couse COOL spots, where teh rest of the crystal is expanding under the heat from the filament, the dirty areas will expand more slowly. If its enough of a difference, then the crystal will shatter.

Problem is, it's not the crystal shattering that kills these bulbs. It's the filament burning out.

Well after 4 sets of bulbs I am going HID. I got them from Revolution Performance for 99.00. Thought I saw a thread on how to mount the ballast. Thought that thread should behind bumper. I only go to two sites here and IMazda. Anyone have any ideas on where to mount the ballast. Kit should be here by Wed.

Hi there,

Long time reader and first time poster.

I changed my driver side bulb 1 week ago and now my passenger side went out. I've had the car for 3 years and i've been changing the bulb at least 2 times a year (6 month average per bulb) and now I am tired.

I'm gonna by a cheap bulb for the rest of the winter and go for HID's next summer. Sylverstars are crap and with all the money I paid for replacement bulbs I could have bought 2 HID kits up to now. Before i read this threat i actually tought that it was really expensive to convert to HIDs but seeing the price, its a no-brainer !

Ive bought my 03 P5 brand new in jan 04 and I have to change my bulbs usuall 2 times a year. It seams like the first time they blow is Nov-Dec when is starts getting really cold. Then again around the end of Jan first of Feb when we have many below 0 days then there fine again till the next winter. I run the silverstars, after they first blew in less than 3 months apart i tried the cheep ones but I couldnt stand how dimm they were so i bought silverstars again. I just changed my bulbs again, My driver side was burnt out and i changed them both. when I took out my Pass side bulb the glass looked like it got so hot that there was a bubble in the glass and the glass had a gray tint like it was blown but it wasent. strange.
Ive seen some posts about hids what are the best and where do you go for the best deal.
I have had so many problems with my P5 im considering trading it in for a new car, the only downfall is its pd for and im not looking forward to another car payment. I was hoping this car would last me a lot longer than it has.

i'm going to be installing some cheap-O foglights behind the lower grill to be used as "Daytime lights" and keeping my HID's for night time only
