Is CX-9 2015 reliable?

I plan to buy a new 2015 CX-9 as my second car. For the Sport AWD model, I got a quota about $26369.0 from local dealers. It is not the best one compared with some shared prices by others in autopriceshare. However, Since it is lower than invoice price, I think it is fair. My last car is 2002 CRV and it is really reliable. For the 2015 CX-9, I am not familiar with it. People in this forum must know CX-9 well. In your opinion, is 2015 CX-9 Sport AWD reliableD? Are there any common problems with this model? Thanks, friends

Lots of threads on this. I'd say it's pretty reliable, I have 40k on my 2013, and the only issue I've had was the BCM going out. With AWD you want to be careful about the transfer case, as the sealed unit is not the most reliable one out there. If you're looking for durability I'd go with a FWD versus the AWD, and that would be true across the board for any SUV.

That being said, that is a very reasonable price IMO. I paid 26k for my CPO 2013 touring (16k miles)

1) for AWD model, be prepared to change the transfer case oil every 15,000 miles even though Mazda says it's a lifetime oil. It's been well documented that the oil capacity is too little and the oil breaks down and starts to leak out of the vent on top of the transfer case. If the oil is not changed, the transfer case eventually fails which may also take out the transmission with it :

2) clogged air conditioner drain, if you start hearing water swishing by the passenger foot well, it's a sign the air conditioner condensation drain is clogged, not a big deal but you'll have to get under the car and unclog it, it happened to me twice now in two years, it gets clogged too easily

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123813466-CX-9-Clogged-AC-Evaporator-Drain

3) USB music restarts from the first song every time the car is re-started. This may sound like a little thing, but trust me it gets really annoying every time you switch to USB audio and hear the same first song over and over again instead of where you last left off.

might be a good idea to wait a few more months for the new redesigned 2016 CX-9 to come out and see if it's worth buying, if not then pick up a brand new 2015 with big discounts, dealers will try to clear out the lot for 2016 models.

I'm at a Grand Touring AWD loaded. Discounts are pretty aggressive right now. I can get it brand new for $32K. Wait for the new model or go for it?

It's been a pretty darn good car for me so far, 60K no issues except
clogged AC drain twice and I have to change transfer case oil on a regular basis.

$32K for Grand Touring AWD loaded is a pretty good deal, but when you say "loaded" which package is included in the $32K ?

Grand Touring Tech Package with sunroof/Bose OR the Rear Entertainment with Bose/(no sunroof)

also is it 0% finance for 5 years (if so, that's a really good deal, otherwise dealers will make money off percentage points)

note: try to score some freebies during negotiations, my sales guy was really, really good, he gave me anything that didn't need to go thru service dept. installation for a work order writeup, he just went to the stock room and put the following in the trunk, i.e. all weather/winter floor mats (front and back!!) , cargo net, first aid kit, wheel locks. I tried to score the $322 retractable cargo cover too but he said it won't work because of the stupid automatic powerlift motor in the way (unbelievable! every other manufacturer can design automatic power liftgates with cargo covers and Mazda Engineers can't ?? they probably didn't realize it until it was too late and had "all well whatever" moment, let's just sell it as non-powerlift models only).

That's with the rear entertainment . Good call on the accessories. I will also need to add the tow hitch. I figure that the new model would be at least $41k for a while when it comes out. So $9k buys a lot of gas, even at CA prices.

wow, that's a great deal. Personally, I would go for it.

however with the AWD, before you signed on the dotted line, read up on the transfer case sludge issues in our how to forum,

make sure you understand you need to change the transfer case oil on a regular basis.

Also, you know the unwritten rule right ? "NEVER BUY A FIRST YEAR MODEL"

there's always bound to be first year teething pains and bugs that need to be worked out.

How much does the dealer charge for the transfer case oil change? I read somewhere that Mazda redesigned the transfer case.

Some members reported anywhere from $99 to $159 and that's if the dealers are even willing to do it, some dealers flat out deny the service saying it's a sealed unit and oil can't be changed, blah, blah, blah.....

BUT here's the good news, it very easy to change the transfer case oil, if you can change your engine oil yourself, you'll have no problems changing the transfer case oil, and a liter of transfer case oil 75W140 oil costs about only $18, see our how to section for procedure.

I highly doubt they changed the design, when I look up the latest p/n AW21-27-500N-9U it looks exactly the same externally and same exact low oil capacity (0.5 liters) which is the main problem, it should have a larger oil capacity for this size vehicle.

As I dropped my daughter off at school the other day I noticed a cheap looking late model Dodge Durango fitted with a Brembo big brake kit front and rear. Ok the CX-9 Has been around for 8+ years and no one makes a big brake kit for the 9. Don't think I will get another CX-9. Although I have not had really anything break on my CX-9, I'm at 85k and about to install it's 3rd set of rotors. The brakes are just too small its as simple as that. I saw the re-designed Honda pilot in person last week and observed the rotors and hardware are noticeably larger than the CX-9. The brakes are deffinately my biggest gripe. But other than that its been a good car. But like others have said here - AWD and you are asking for it.

The transfer case on the 2014+ is actually sourced through an entirely different manufacturer from what Mazda has been saying. It does externally look the same though. But as we all know, it wasnt a manufacturing fault, more as a inadequate fluid supply issue.

There are multiple kits available for the Ford Edge. Which would fit our CX9's and be a direct bolt on. I found a Brembo kit in less then a minute of searching, and im sure there are probably multiple other kits. :)
Im still on my original brakes all around at 48k miles on mine. No issues or warping at all. I plan to upgrade them all when the time comes though to a set of quality StopTech rotors, and some quality ceramic pads.

Original owner of the 6 in my signiture, and never had an issue on that car either. Of course i was the first NA6 to do the full Speed6 brake swap back in like 2008. Haha. Im swapping the speed6 stuff out now for a full Wilwood 13in kit in the front, and a custom 13in kit for the rear. :)

On my 2010 6, front rotors were FUBAR within 20k miles. Had them swapped for non OEM rotors and all was good afterwards.

I could believe that. The 2nd gen 6's got the same stock brakes as the smaller, and lighter 1st gen 6's. No difference at all, They just carried the full setup over.
