Is 5w-50 oil any good

I came home from the local car store and thought I had 3 quarts of 5w-30 and I had 5w-50 castol syntec. I saw the bottle said improved for better performance and there were only a couple of spots for oil, did this replace 5w-30 oil. My father in law thinks this oil will be fine, even up here in MN. I already had one bottle of 5w-30 so 1 threw all 4 bottles into my Protege5.

Any one else use it?

It might be perceived but I think my engine is more quiet since I changed to this oil.

I use 5w-30 in the winter, 10w-30 in the summer- that is the reccomendation.

castrol is mediocre oil. That said, it certainly wont do any harm.
If you want the good stuff, get mobil1 or royal purple.

EDIT: I just noticed you are using 5w-50. No, dont use that. Thats not the weight that our motors are designed for.

The name scheme is used because modern motor oils are variable weight- ie. they thin out when hot. You want a lower low/side weight for winter because the motor will be very cold at start. However, you dont want to change the upper weight.

He's right, if you put the 50w in get it out as soon as you can. Most likely it want hurt anything but it can. The seals arn't ment for that weight oil.
