ipod, 2014 CX5 GT stereo and Mazda Customer Service

While the car works mechanically, I didn't purchase a base model car. I paid extra money for features in addition to the basic car.

My comparing the iPod issue to the brakes was to make a point in response to another post only. That was the whole idea of quoting part of the post I was responding to. Even if you disagree with those extremes, then skip to the examples of windows and door locks. However, again, I didn't buy just an engine in a chassis with wheels. I bought an engine in a chassis with wheels, a horn, windows, doors, and a stereo system that's compatible with my iPod.

However, if you are sick of reading the posts, please skip the thread.

garyd9...I am in complete agreement with you. As far as I'm concerned, if any feature in the car doesn't work as described in the owners manual, the manufacturer is obligated to fix it. I'm extremely frustrated with this iPod/USB issue in my brand new 2014 CX-5. It always starts with the same song when I plug it in and displays a completely different song than the one that is playing. It doesn't know what to do when I select a different song/artist, so it ends up doing nothing. Sometimes all I get is loud static. Some songs are listed 3 or 4 times on screen. Completely useless feature of the car! iPods have been around for how long? Not exactly a new technology. The folks at the dealership tell me to replace my USB cable; a cable that works fine everywhere else. How stupid is that? This software should never have made it to market, and the fact that it did tells me that Mazda doesn't give a hoot about its customers. This was my first Mazda purchase and it will definitely be my last. What's really disappointing is that I didn't know about this issue prior to purchase and didn't know about this forum. There was nothing about this problem on Edmunds or the other review sites I looked at when researching cars. Mazda must pay them off to remove discussion about obvious flaws in their cars. That's all I can figure.

IF this issue is enough to make you not buy from a automaker, you might as well skip Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Hyundai, KIA,etc. as each of these automakers have Iphone/USB issues as well with the same type of runaround reported by buyers of those brands. I doubt it is unique to Mazda.

^^ My Toyota Tacoma head unit worked flawlessly. I plugged in my iPod and a few seconds later had full menus, full playlists, perfect playback, and it always resumed exactly where it left off. Kind of like the Kenwood unit I put in my CX-5.

a system in the car that has NOTHING to do with the car's driving enjoyment.
I couldn't disagree more with this statement. The stereo adds GREATLY to my driving enjoyment. I understand that may not be the case for everyone though.

fwiw: I test drove both the Honda CRV and a Subaru Forester last weekend. The USB performed flawlessly on both. I will likely buy the Subaru.

I was debating the Subaru Crosstrek and Forester. Both are really nice. I liked the Forester but the CX-5 won out because of handling, MPGs and looks. I hope you enjoy whichever CUV you pick.
