intercooler on n/a

is it possible to put an intercooler on a n/a car. would it work, would colder air b available for the intake.

I'm not a mechanic :

I think you would end up choking the intake. While I am sure you could bolt one on, all Intercoolers have a certain amount of pressure loss. Also, an intercooler is designed to be connected to a forced induction system which is pushing the air though the system. I don't believe that your stock airbox, or even a SRI/CAI would be able to create enough pressure to push the air through effectively. A custom RAM-AIR might work, but at low speeds again you would have the same problem, I think.

If you really want colder air, pick up an Injen CAI - though since you already have the AEM SRI, your performance gain would more than likely be only slightly noticable; maybe 1 HP.

Micah pretty much covered it there. A intercooler placed into the intake track wouldn't really help any. Intercooler only really helps to cool air that is under pressure which doesn't happen till its in the cyclinders on a N/A engine.
Now there maybe a way to rig around that but overall the time and effort placed into it wouldn't add up in the long run.

I have seen intakes that are placed in the front with a tank instead of a filter. Sorta of looks like a FMIC but really isn't as no end tanks and only a outlet. Not sure how much more HP that thing gives, guess it depends on the car and how whacky the piping is.

They do have a few intakes made for Hondas that look like intercoolers. They mount in the lower front grill just like an intercooler but they have a filter in them that simulate the fins. Just have to watch out for water. It would be a good idea to get the AEM bypass vavle if you got one. Oh, it would have to be custom fitted since I haven't seen one for the Protege.

Wouldn't the ambient air blowing on the "intercooler" be just about the same temperature as the intake temperature? And if the "intercooler" did happen to cool the air, wouldn't it just heat up to the same temperature as it would without the "intercooler"? Just a guess...

NO

It will degrade performance. You are creating a restriction to the intake.
