Intake, Real HP or just noise???

Does just an intake on a Stock Speed3 make power?

I been trying to keep my car stock (07 Speed3) until Cobb comes out with the Access Port as I like the quiet smooth power with the stock exhaust and intake, BUT... I so want to beat my buddies 300C Srt-8 in the 1/4. His car doesn't that great, hes got a Mopar Intake and thats it, the tranny is having some issues, so I have a chance (We have run from speed once and he said he couldn't catch me above 40, wasn't the fairest race but it made me think i have a chance). We have sworn not to race on street as were both stupid and competitive and these cars are both fast. Were planning to go run the 1/4 in the next few weeks, I been waiting to get tranny oil changed and I also switched to Mobil 1, put on the CorkSport Bushing Inserts and TWM Shifter Bushing in (And for the Temps to come down...lol, helps me more then him) Hes a real cocky All-American Muscle guy and lately I've seen he has noticed how fast my car is and its shut him up a little. I Really want to beat him, I don't care if its by a 1/1000th. For those of you that take there speed3's to the track, I've seen some exceptional claims and others say they don't feel aw difference. Does it help you run a quicker 1/4? Period, that's all I want to know. Butt Dyno's and such are great I just want to know what the Drag guys see at the track or back to back dyno runs?

Thanks all,
Tom

Most of the SRT-8 cars and trucks run low 13's if Im not mistaken. good luck keeping up with an intake only.

I know I'm asking allot, his car has 425hp stock, but I don't know I think I got a shot. Hes run his car in the 1/8 and his best time so far is only around a 9.0. He thinks he can only beat me if he gets me in first 1/8, I got more from 80 on then him and he knows that. Guess well see soon enough.

i am no race car driver and i have 0 qualifications for even calling myself a halfway decent dragracer, so this is going to be a rather noobish observation, but i honestly did not notice a very large difference with my cobb sri when i put it in. the biggest difference for me was being able to hear my turbo and bpv, and that's good enough for me until the accessport comes out and i can do a stage1 flash for some serious cobble cobble! ;)

The Mazdaspeed CAI does make a difference; a HUGE difference!!!!
I've been reading that the shorty intakes don't do much...

At first my butt dyno told me my cai made some difference, but thinkin about it now is making me think otherwise. I thought it pulled harder, but maybe it's just the slow lag that the cai made before the boost kicked in made me think it pulled harder. I don't know, maybe I just got used to the power. But on the plus side, hearing the spool is great!

I know after I put in the MS CAI, my MS3 pulled harder and lost traction in first, second, and third gear!!! Well, still does... :)

i think the main reason you get such a difference from the MS CAI is because it changes your AFR because the MAF housing is slightly bigger than the stock housing. basically, you're leaning out your AFR a bit because there's more air flowing than the MAF thinks.

if you want to try an experiment, AutoXRacer, i bet you will get performance that's almost identical if you ran you MS CAI in SRI form...;)

Hmm...really??? That would be sweet!!

ya, the main reason i like SRI better is just because of ease of install and maintenance of the filter. it's just sooooooo much easier to get at...+_+;

...that and when the cobb AP comes out, they're not going to have loads for the MS CAI! ;)

cobble cobble...:D:D:D

So they are gonna pull a Microsoft basically? You can't buy our computer without buying our hardware? I wasn't going to get the Access Port in the first place, I was gonna go with a PnP XEDE, but that makes me want the AP even less.

Ditto. Especially since soo many people have the MS CAI. Hopefully they won't do that and put some time/effor into just putting out a good product for the masses. It will make them more money in the long run. I chose the MS CAI because of warranty issues. Plus, I like that it says Mazdaspeed (thumb)

the AP is tunable, but it just happens to be that previous releases of it for the evo and wrx/sti seem to only contain support for stock or cobb intake solutions. in order to support the MS CAI, they're going to have to make a whole new map, because the MS CAI does not make stock AFR (which is what cobb took the time to design their SRI to use). they put a lot of time into the tunes that they provide for their AP, so i don't think it's fair to fault them for not providing a load for an intake that does not adhere to stock AFR (which is pretty lame, since mazda is the one who makes it...). in the end, you can always just have it tuned for the MS CAI and just create a new load to support that.

if the XEDE solution turns out to be vastly superior to the cobb solution, then i'd be all for investigating it, but for now, i'm definitely waiting patiently for the AP until i know better. do you guys know what kind of loads the XEDE will be providing?

If BEGi, who seems to be the XEDE tuners for our car, runs anything like Vishnu, it'll most likely come with a stock load. From what I've read about XEDEs on 335is (where I've done most of my XEDE research), it is fairly easy to dyno tune, and speaking breifly with Stephanie, I believe if you plug it in, do a few runs, and send them the info, they can send you a map back based on what it logs for you. Of course, that was just a few posts on here, and I could possibly wrong. You'll need to ask her for clarification.

ya, from what i understand, cobb will have a number of loads based on configurations using the stock intake/cobb SRI, cobb TBE, and 91/93 octane gasolines. they will also have fuel economic and valet flashs. outside of their standard flashes, you can take your car to any cobb-approved tuning shop and they will tune you up a load specifically for your particular set of mods. i, personally, will just go with the stage 1 (stock or cobb intake). eventually, i'll probably get the cobb tbe, so then i'll switch to the stage 2 flash...:D

Back on topic...

After the MS CAI, the noise was greatly improved (IMO) and it allows for better breathing in higher speeds. I dont have any hard evidence to support my claim, but I bet 60-100 or 80-100mph runs would be a bit faster.

Another thing to be aware of is the several dyno sheets that show a 20-25 awhp gain from just the MS CAI. This is certainly more than just flash.

You can find them on this forum and I think a Google search might help as well.
