Sunday I had some extra time so I pulled the intake manifold off of my spare motor (came out of a '02 P5).
When I started looking at it I couldn't help but laugh, so I went to my MSP and checked, sure enough the MSP has the same set-up. Those shutter valves at the end of the intake manifold block over 23% (after quick cal.) of the port opening to the head. And then to top it off the difference between the intake manifold port to the head port is HUGE. The head ports dwarf those small intake ports. There is a HUGE amount of power to be made with alittle time and a dremel.

I split the intake manifold and looked at the vics......I can't see improving the setup too much without making another lower half of the intake manifold, so I think I'm gonna leave that portion alone.

I already removed the other shutter valves and jb welded the holes, lined the gaskets for gasket matching the intake manifold, and also made plans for a porting the throttlebody bore...(already ported the throttlebody a few months ago.)

Just thought I'd throw out my plans for the intake manifold.

Heres some pics of the progress....

good work.. our intake mani is a joke... the intake holes in the head are twice the size of the manifold runners.

i have seen a 1.6l and the 2.0l intake mani side by side, you should see how much bigger the 1.6l is.

Ok, I've never cracked open a Intake manifold, and I don't know exactly how mazda's vics is layed out. But I'm curious how you can just remove some of the shutters and have the car still run right. And what holes are you talking about plugging?
Anyone have links to vics diagram?
This is very interesting.

peepsalot- Nothing was touched with the vics system. Thats a whole different set of shutter valves. The ones I took out are for the ulev system on start-up. I'm not sure if the ecu monitoirs this so I don't know if the check engine lights gonna make an apperance.

Pretty much finished up with the porting, just a couple of hrs. worth of polishing left. The ports on the intake now match the size of the ports on the head quite well. Plus I got rid of the step/stoppers for the shutter valves and smoothed it out dramatically.

I plan on putting the intake manifold on tommorow after work. So gains, if any, should be felt on wednesday at the track.

How hard is it to remove the intake manifold..? I have decent knowledge and alot of tools, just to lazy to go out and look.

On the 626's 2.0 it took less than 45mins to remove and install. If it takes me more than an hr. I'll be highly disappointed with myself.

good work!

an idea i had many moons ago was to drill through the bottom of the VICS "chamber" into the plenum. that way when the butterflys open, you'll get a massive increase in air being able to get into the engine....

Its in, on, done. Check engine light came on upon intial start-up, probably due to someone f'in with me and disconnecting the maf sensor (gave me a heart attack, wouldn't idle, smoked, surged......eh...bastards). After that was straightened out, it took alittle playing to get it to idle down properly. Couldn't clear codes, or really play with it too much because the WDS is broken....

Couldn't tell you too much on performance....everything feels faster on the street. I can tell you it runs alittle leaner above 4k. And it sure feels strong... Have to wait for tommorow night to see if any real gains were made.

I do have some nice pics. comparing the stock intake ports to the ported ones....I'll post them tommorow.

good deal...ill be doing mine this weekend., id do it before, but i just have no time during the weekdays with work, etc...

I had a pic of the throttlebody on this site somewhere... Throttleplate on the one on it now is stock. However there is no longer any type of lip on the throttlebody (if you have seen the stock throttlebody, you know what I'm talking about). I won't tell you guys what happened to the first throttlebody I ported (ahem...ice water through hot thin throttlebody....ahem.)

ya i know what you mean by the lip. i might start porting it tonight if i get bored...not sure if i have the right bit with my dremel though, i goto see..

in terms of TB (i'm not full on mathematical with it), would it be more benefitial to just bore out the TB before the butterfly plate and leave the size at the butterfly plate the same? ie would it give increase air speed and the same amount of air? just a thought...
